Description:

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates generally to pillows and comfort aids. More particularly, the invention relates to a transformable pillow which can have a body and appendages with openings for receiving and concealing appendages of the pillow.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

There are various therapeutic pillows in the field of textile products. Some of these provide tactile characteristics which comfort the user. Other pillows are configured to provide an emotional benefit from doll shapes that help in relieving affective need and insecurity. Some pillows serve as a companion to avoid boredom or loneliness. Still other pillows provide for aromatic inserts using herbs and scented material including medicinal herbs, for example, which also serve to comfort the user. A common feature of these other pillows is to provide a decorative appearance of the pillow. Some pillows are configured with blankets. Other dolls exist which are configured to be stored in carrying cases or the like, however, too often the case becomes misplaced from the doll and combines features are lost.

While there are many configurations of such pillows, it is desirable to improve the art of pillows which are configured to serve such comforting purposes as stated above.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a therapeutic pillow.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a transformable pillow having a body and corresponding appendages.

It is another object to provide a transformable pillow which includes an integral pillow case to store appendages connected thereto.

It is another object to provide a comfort aid in the form of a pillow.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a pillow having a plurality of appendages which are individually disposable underneath an integral pillow case cover to provide a pillow having two different appearances, one of a conventional appearance and another of a body shaped appearance, for example.

Another object of the present invention is a pillow having a cover that removably stores appendages therein.

According to the present invention is directed to a pillow having a body shaped cover enclosing a soft filler material to form a body shaped pillow, wherein the body shaped pillow includes a central torso which is configured in a generally rectangular shape and appendages connected thereto and a secondary cover connected about the torso to the body shaped cover to removably store each of the appendages therebetween the covers in a manner to provide an appearance of a conventional pillow when storing the appendages therebetween. The secondary cover can preferably be connected to the central torso about the body shaped cover having an opening adjacent each appendage to receive a corresponding appendage therethrough. The stuffing material can preferably be sufficiently compressible to permit ready insertion through such openings as well as remain sufficiently compressed to provide the conventional pillow appearance.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

A more complete appreciation of the invention and advantages thereof will be more readily appreciated and better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

FIG. 1 is a front perspective showing a part cut away of the transformable pillow in a fully extended mode according to the present invention;

FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken through line 2-2 of FIG. 1.

FIG. 3 is a front perspective of the transformable pillow in a partially extended mode according to the present invention;

FIG. 4 is a back perspective of the transformable pillow in a fully enclosed mode according to the present invention;

FIG. 5 is a front perspective of the transformable pillow in a fully enclosed mode according to the present invention; and

FIG. 6 is another front perspective of the transformable pillow in a fully enclosed mode according to the present invention.

FIG. 7 depicts a revealed view of the invention with part of a cover opened.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Referring now to the drawings, a transformable pillow of the present invention is generally designated by the numeral 10 which in the preferred embodiment is shown to be in the form of a human shape, but it is contemplated to cover other bodies such as animals, for example. Thus it is understood the body is to take on a living organism shape. The human shaped pillow 10 includes a human shaped cover 12 enclosing a stuffing material 14 to form the human shaped pillow configuration. The transformable pillow 10 includes a central torso 16 which can be configured in a generally rectangular shape to simulate a conventional pillow and further includes legs 18, arms 20 and head 22 (appendages) connected to the torso 16. The transformable pillow 10 can preferably be of a size which approximates the user to create a life size feel and comforting effect to the user.

A secondary cover 24 is fixably connected about the torso 16 exterior to the human shaped cover 12 and is of a size and configuration for removably storing each of the appendages 18, 20 and 22 therein to provide an appearance of a conventional pillow when storing the same. In this regard, the size of the torso 16 should be large enough such that when the appendages 18, 20 and 22 are stored between the covers 12 and 24, the aesthetic appearance is maintained in the form of a conventional pillow, such as a generally rectangular pillow. In other words, the appendages 18, 20 and 22 need be proportionate to permit the desired effect when stored between the secondary cover 24 and the cover 12. Additionally, the second cover 24 can be configured with inner and outer panels (24A and 24B) to include a relatively thin amount of filler material or padding which can include cotton, nylon, and polyfoam, and preferably a non-allergenic synthetic material such as all new synthetic polyester fiber. The outer panel 24A and cover 12 can be of a suitably desirable material, such as cotton or flannel, while it is preferable that the inner panel 24B and preferably a portion of the cover 12 adjacent thereto be of a slick material such as satin or silk. This better enables the insertion of the appendages 18, 20 and 22.

The secondary cover 24 can be connected to the central torso 16 about the human shaped cover 12 in a manner to have openings 26, 28 and 30 adjacent the head 22, arms 20 and legs 18, respectively. In the case of the arms 20, openings 28 are similarly formed to receive one arm 20 through each. Opening 30 can be a single opening to receive the legs 18 therethrough. It is contemplated that two openings could alternatively be used for the legs 18.

The stuffing material 14 (which can be soft filler) can preferably be sufficiently compressed to permit ready insertion of appendages 18, 20 and 22 through such openings 26, 28 and 30 as well as remain sufficiently compressed in conjunction with the torso 16 to provide the conventional pillow appearance as seen in FIG. 4. The soft filler material can include cotton, nylon, and polyfoam, and preferably a non-allergenic synthetic material such as all new synthetic polyester fiber.

The human shaped cover 12 can include front and rear fabric panels which are sewn or otherwise connected together by a peripheral seam. The secondary cover 24 can likewise include a fabric panel configured about the torso 16 and can be sewn or otherwise connected to the cover 12 about the torso 16 in a manner to provide the openings 26, 28 and 30 and contain the appendages 18, 20 and 22.

The head 22, arms 20, and legs 18 fold at the connection thereof to the torso 16 to permit their inserted through openings 26, 28 and 30 and provide for the visual effect to be achieved. These fold connections can be formed by providing an essentially flat stitching area to the appendages 18, 20 and 22 providing a flat connection. The flat connections facilitate storing appendages 18, 20 and 22 through each respective opening 26, 28 and 30. Otherwise the transformable pillow 10 takes on an expansive nature by virtue of stuffing material 14.

By so providing, there is an improved therapeutic human shaped pillow which includes an integral secondary cover which together with part of the primary or human shaped cover serve to store the appendages therein in a manner which provides an appearance of a conventional pillow in one mode and a human shape in another mode all the while maintaining all components in a continuously attached manner to prevent disassociation of parts. It is also contemplated that aromatic packets, heat packs, pads or the like can be inserted within the covers 12 and 24 to be maintained therebetween.

Although the invention has been described relative to specific embodiments thereof, it is not so limited and numerous variations and modifications thereof will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art in the light of the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced other than as specifically described.
