DowelLocs fastened to build

A DowelLocs is a three part fastener. A left side, right side and a dowel to protrude through a hole matching both that has been drilled through each. At times a DowelLocs stop has to be initiated to keep placement of fastener dowel correct. The DowelLocs work against each other for non-bending and overall support and strength. The DowelLocs are any material that will suffice their use. It is always a left, right or rightleft or vice versa arrangement, but the joining materials have either a right or left but not both.

1. A DowelLocs comprising: a block of wood or other material with a hole put through it on center or off: center: this block of wood or other material is one part of a set of two; this is designated the left side of DowelLocs; the hole off center or on center will match up in same dimensions with DowelLocs right side; the block dimensions are the same length, width, and height; a left and right will never be on the same piece of material; the materials being joined will have only one side of DowelLocs per each material; left side will be flush with right side when materials are connected; hole is on center or off center matching in circumference; placement of materials make DowelLocs work against each other to prevent bending; they work against each other for strength; a block of wood or other material with a hole put through it on center or off center; this block of wood or other material is one part of a set of two; this is designated the right side of DowelLocs; the hole off center or on center will match up in same dimensions with left side of DowelLocs; the block dimensions are the same length, width, and height; a pair of DowelLocs which will comprise four separate blocks of wood or other material; the pair meaning a DowelLocs left and right; whereas a left, right will match a left, right on the same parallel line at any given distance; this pairing of Dowellocs will have identical off center or on center holes; the block dimensions are the same length, width, and height; a wood dowel or other round material will be run the distance between two DowelLocs; the dowel will run to the farthest ends of the DowelLocs or beyond; the dowel on some applications may have to go through another substrate not intended to lend support; but just to give a hole opening to utilize the pairing of DowelLocs; said dowel will be diameter of Dowellocs hole to be able to create a fastener between the two objects utilizing the DowelLocs; a Dowellocs Stop which is one side of a Dowellocs with a hole matching a hole on a pair of Dowellocs intended to create an end support or stoppage apparatus in some specific applications; the Dowellocs stop has a hole on center or off center drilled halfway through to give a resting area for one end of Dowellocs dowel.

2. A rolling wooden train toy chest assembly, comprising: a left and right side panel with right side,left side of DowelLocs attached on bottom in joining a bottom panel with left side,right side of DowelLocs attached on both sides; side panel DowelLocs are attached at a distance up corresponding to the thickness of the bottom panel; bottom panel DowelLocs are parallel with edge of panel; the DowelLocs will be fastened by a wood dowel on both sides with an overlap of dowel length; the way these DowelLocs are attached prevents any back and forth movement of joined materials; a back panel with four right side DowelLocs attached to it, which will match up to two left side DowelLocs on each side panel; a DowelLocs stop will be placed on the back end of side panel to provide a resting spot for wood dowel; the DowelLocs will be fastened with a wood dowel with overlap on top DowelLocs for removal. bottom end to be placed in DowelLocs stop; right or left of DowelLocs may be placed either way on back panels and sides; a center bulkhead comprising two DowelLocs on right and left sides to include a DowelLocs stop on each side; a hole to be drilled in bottom corners to facilitate the wood dowel for side DowelLocs; bulkhead to be fastened by a wood dowel that protrudes through DowelLocs put on on each side piece; right and left of DowelLocs may be attached either to side or center bulkhead; a front nose piece connected by DowelLocs to the right and left sides; right and left DowelLocs may be on either materials; a wood dowel will be used to fasten the nose to the sides with a bottom stop placed on each side bottom for dowel to rest in; top part of dowel will protrude past DowelLocs; a removable roof piece will be fastened by two dowellocs; the wood dowel will fasten the two pieces with an end of dowel protruding past far side of DowelLocs; the roof top rests on top of wooden train box; roof piece has runner stops on each side; a removable front cowl which rests on to front area of train; a set of four wooden wheels that run on wooden dowel axles attached by axle supports that are on bottom of train box; wheels are held on by bushings and wood screw on caps; a wood steering wheel attached to front cowl with screw on wood screw on cap over dowel; a two piece removable wooden seat section placed on supports inside cabin area;

This invention relates generally to wood furniture fasteners.


In todays very mobile societies wood furniture is mainly purchased to be assembled, whereas this could be children's toy furniture and adult furniture. Childrens wooden toys also are primarily assembled. I have found that through my years of wood working that a wood screw puts to much of a strain on the materials being joined. Looking at cam lock systems it seems they have to hold a tight tolerance to be rigid, which when most are used on recycled composition board, that becomes an impossibility. Being that probably over eighty percent of our assembled furniture, toys, etc are composition board; I see no easy way to get them assembled, since the material is not rigid in itself. In my DowelLocs Systems of attachment I create attachment without putting a lot of stress on the material being attached. I also create a system of easy assembly and since it can be disassembled quickly that is good for a mobile society. DowelLocs can be epoxied, screwed, and embedded to joining materials leaving the stress on the Dowellocs themselves. Precise alignment is not as critical as other wood furniture fasteners on the market.


The objects of the DowelLocs are:

  • To be adhered to opposing materials to be joined.
  • To be hole drilled on center or off center.
  • To be referred to as a left and right side of a single DowelLocs.
  • To be fastened to each other after being placed side by side by a dowel passing through their drilled hole.
  • To be sometimes terminated when necessary by a DowelLocs stop.
  • To be easy to assemble and disassemble.

FIG. 22 shows a placement of all the main pieces of the train that are fastened together by DowelLocs or other means. Note that the Cowl and Cabin Roof is not fastened by DowelLocs. Just goes in place non-secure resting by its own weight. DowelLocs create an angle hinge for the roof. The trains axles are shown going through there supports. Displayed on their ends by three lines; the line closest to the train is the wheelbushing, next one in order going away from the train is the appropriate wheel and then the wheel is secured by the wheel Hub fastener. Please note that the train front has angled louvers and the train right and left sides have for apperance only, exhaust ports. Both louvers and exhaust ports have no bearing on the workability of Dowellocs Fastened to Build. As for the cabin roof the proper placement of the Dowellocs creates the proper angle and roof stays secure by stops on both panels which are visible on their lower portions.

Dowellocs Fastened to Build order of Assembly for the Train is the following. Take side piece FIG. 5, FIG. 6 attach to FIG. 7 by fastener FIG. 3. Fasten assembled FIGS. 5,6,7 to FIG. 8, FIG. 9, FIG. 10 by fastener FIG. 3. Slide wheel axles FIG. 12 through axle support holders FIG. 17, Slide bushing FIG. 20 over axle FIG. 12 slide on wheels FIG. 13 and FIG. 14 then screw on hub fastener FIG. 15. Place steering wheel over FIG. 21 threaded short axle, fasten with FIG. 15 screw on hub fastener; then slide in hole on back of cowl piece FIG. 18. Place FIG. 11 Cabin Roof on cabin area of train, place removable cabin seats FIG. 19 inside of train on support brackets. Place front cowl FIG. 18 on train.

The DowelLocs are a very simplistic assembly process. It may be a space obstruction in some applications but overall it may be applied to many applications. In childrens toys it becomes very child safe being that sharp objects are not involved. I must say its applications can be applied to numerous industries. To end I cannot really elaborate further on there functionability, it is very basic and simplistic.
