Description:
[0001] This invention relates to a mitt for curling irons. Typically, curling irons are a problem after use as they are hot and can burn both the user and children. In addition, when in use it is difficult for the user to lay the iron down for fear of burning surfaces or materials on which the iron is lain. The instant invention utilizes a combination of design features to provide a unique and practical iron which is cheap to produce and yet affords all of the advantages of more expensive mitts.

BACKGROUND AND PRIOR ART

[0002] Prior attempts at curling iron mitts have not produced the advantages of the instant mitt. The disclosure by Drake et al in U.S. Pat. No. 5,577,607 shows a pouch for curling irons which has a pair of additional layers 34 on each side of the pouch to add insulating capacity. The problem with the Drake pouch is that it does not provide a simple drawstring and padded outer surface for fashion as well as to protect surfaces on which the device is place. Neither is it reversible to provide a heat insulating surface on which to lay the ho iron while in use. The patent to Conway, No. 4,570,792 shows a curling iron sheath with a heat insulating layer but which does not provide a surface on which to lay the hot iron. The device does not have a drawstring loop by which to easily close and carry it and does not have a childproof lock. The instant invention provides both a pouch for the hot iron after use and before use as well as a mat upon which to lay the hot iron while in use. It also provides a fashionable mitt that can complement a handbag and has the advantages of being tamper proof by children. The quilting in addition to the heat resistant inner layer helps disperse heat as well as provides a soft surface for laying on tables and the like.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

[0003] The mitt that forms the subject matter of this invention has two layers, a first inner layer made of heat resistant material that is adapted to receive an electrically heated or gas heated hot iron after use and to provide a pocket for carrying the iron around by the user The iron is secured within the mitt by a drawstring which allows the mitt to accommodate all types of curling irons and therefore does not have to be designed in shape and length for one specific type or shape of iron. Additionally, the mitt has an outside cover which is made of quilted material such as in an oven mitt that helps the inner layer disperse the heat radiated from the iron. The iron can be plugged in while it is in the mitt thus allowing the user to avoid having to use a surface or other material on which to lay the iron. The quilted material is thick enough to provide a padding which keeps the iron inside from damaging surfaces or items if it is inadvertently dropped or is laid on a polished surface in too hard a manner. The childproof lock on the drawstring of the instant invention is simple to use and affords a way to keep children from tampering with the iron, whether it be hot or cold.

[0004] The mitt can have one side with the quilted layer to afford a fashionable look and the reverse side of heat resistant material with a metallic layer to allow the user to place the hot iron thereon during the use of the iron thus avoiding burning surfaces or other materials. Additionally, the mitt may have quilted material on all outside surfaces and be reversible so that when turned inside out provides a mat for laying the hot iron upon to avoid burning table surfaces and the like.

[0005] Accordingly it is an object of this invention to provide a curling iron mitt which provides a heat insulated receptacle for hot curling irons, and

[0006] It is another object of this invention to provide a curling iron mitt which has a first layer of heat insulating material and an outer layer of quilted heat resistant material which helps disperse the heat from a hot curling iron within,

[0007] Yet another object of this invention is to provide a curling iron mitt which is secured with a drawstring to accommodate various shapes and lengths of curling irons,

[0008] Still another object of this invention is to provide a curling iron mitt which has a childproof drawstring lock which deters children tampering with the mitt and/or iron inside,

[0009] A further object of this invention is to provide a curling iron mitt with a heat resistant layer of fifty percent polyester and fifty percent cotton with a metallic top layer,

[0010] Still another object of this invention is to provide a curling iron mitt which is reversible to allow the mitt to be turned inside out to provide a surface for laying the hot iron upon,

[0011] And another object of this invention is to provide a curling iron mitt which has a quilted layer on one side to afford a fashionable look and a metallic heat resistant layer on the opposite side.

[0012] These and other objects will become apparent when reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which.

[0013] FIG. 1 is a plan view of the mitt showing the top slightly opened to show the heat resistant material,

[0014] FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the mitt showing the top closed with the drawstring,

[0015] FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the mitt showing the top of the mitt.

[0016] FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the mitt with the top drawn open,

[0017] FIG. 5 is a plan view of the reverse side of the mitt showing a hot iron laying thereon,

[0018] FIG. 6 is a side view of the childproof lock.

[0019] Referring now to FIG. 1 there is shown the mitt 10 with a quilted fabric 11 on at least one side thereof with upper portion 12 and sewn as at 13 to provide a loop section 14 for drawstring 15. A heat resistant fabric 16 forms the inner portion of the mitt 10 and the whole mitt may be turned inside out to provide a heat resistant surface upon which to lay the iron. FIG. 5 shows the iron 20 laying upon the reversed inner heat resistant surface of the mitt. The iron has a handle portion 22, an iron portion 21 and a clasping portion 23. The iron shown is an electric iron although the mitt can accommodate irons heated by other means.

[0020] The mitt has a narrowing portion as at 16 to allow for the iron portion 21 of the iron to be securely held and the upper portion being wider to accommodate the clasping portion 23. FIG. 4 shows the top of the mitt opened to reveal the heat resistant material 17 inside. The inner material is heat resistant up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and is made up of heat resistant polyester and cotton with a metallic top layer with the polyester and cotton being of 50% each. The heat is dispersed throughout the fabrics and not contained in one area. The drawstring cord is 100% polyester and the lock has a spring therein which one has to pull on tab portion 19 to release the grip on the drawstring. The quilted fabric is 100% cotton with an inner layer of 100% cotton nonflammable, nonwoven, insulative batting which helps disperse the heat throughout the unit.

[0021] FIG. 6 shows the lock 18 with its depressable tab portion 19 which fits inside 18 in apeture 25 which has a depressable spring 24 therein so that spring 24 acts on annular rim 26 of tab 19 which force it down within 18 tending to close the space in hole 28.

[0022] Having described the preferred embodiment of the invention it will be readily apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art that many changes and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
