Abstract:
An antistatic and antiyellowing agent for textile materials comprises a substantially water-insoluble compound consisting of a high molecular weight part having a number of quaternary nitrogen atoms and anionic parts each having more than 4 carbon atoms and from 2 to 10 anionic functional groups. The high molecular weight part is a polymer of an ethelenically unsaturated monomer having a quaternary nitrogen atom which may form part of a heterocyclic ring which ring may also contain a second hetero atom. May such polymers are listed of which poly-b -methacryloxyethyldiethylmethyl ammonium methyl sulphate, polyacrylamidopropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, poly - N - methyl - 2 - vinylpridinium methyl sulphate, polyacrylaminidopropylbutoxymethyl morpholinium chloride, poly-N-vinyl-N-methylimidazolinium methyl sulphate, a copolymer of poly-b -methacryloxyethyldiethylmethyl ammonium methyl sulphate with methyl methacrylate, and a copolymer of N - methyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - vinylpyridinium bromide with acrylamide are exemplified. Anionic parts exemplified are disodium nonyl succinate, disodium dodecenyl succinate, disodium butylnaphthalene disulphonate, sodium pyromellitate, sodium salt of sorbitol-propylene oxide adduct phosphate, sodium salt of a -sulphonated stearic acid, disodium nonyldiphenylether disulphonate, disodium dodecyl sulphonate, and disodium dodecyl sulphosuccinate. A number of others are listed. Anionic parts exemplified are disodium nonyl succinate, disodium dodecenyl succinate, disodium butylnaphthalene disulphonate, sodium pyromellitate, sodium salt of sorbitol-propylene oxide adduct phosphate, sodium salt of a -sulphonated stearic acid, disodium nonyldiphenylether disulphonate, disodium dodecyl sulphonate, and disodium dodecyl sulphosuccinate. A number of others are listed. The preformed agent may be applied to the textiles or it may be formed in situ by first soaking the textile material in an aqueous solution of the high molecular weight part and then treating with an aqueous solution of the anionic part. Cloth materials treated in the examples are nylon, polyester, polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile, polyester/cotton, and polyester/polyacrylonitrile.
