DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

Reference will now be made in detail to the embodiments of the present general inventive concept, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to the like elements throughout. The embodiments are described below in order to explain the present general inventive concept while referring to the figures.

FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrate a weighted sleeve 1 according to an embodiment of the present general inventive concept. The weighted sleeve 1 may be worn by a human or an animal on a limb (e.g., an arm or leg) to exercise the limb or rehabilitate the limb. The weighted sleeve 1 has an inner portion 5 to be placed on the limb and an outer portion 8 disposed opposite the inner portion 5. The outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1 may be made of a stretchable polyester blended fabric or a blend of polyester, lycra-type elastane and nylon that is stretchable, and the inner portion 5 of the sleeve 1 may be made of hypoallergenic fleece that absorbs moisture such as perspiration, sweat, etc. Other materials and blends thereof may also be used which provide the desired purposes as provided herein. Accordingly, the sleeve 1 provides comfort, stability, free range of motion, chaff resistance, slip resistance, absorption of moisture including perspiration, and stretchable qualities allowing for secure and flexible use on different regions of the limb. Additionally, the sleeve 1 is machine washable and dryable. The inner and outer portions 5 and 8 of the sleeve 1 collectively form a main portion of the sleeve 1.

The inner portion 5 and the outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1 can be attached together around their respective perimeters by a stitching. The stitching can be positioned through the inner and outer portions 5 and 8 such that a perimeter portion 4 is formed along the perimeters of the inner and outer portions 5 and 8 of the sleeve 1.

FIG. 3 is a top view illustrating an elongated pocket 10 of the weighted sleeve 1. Referring to FIG. 2, a plurality of the elongated pockets 10 are arranged along a length direction of the sleeve 1 (i.e., a direction along which the limb is disposed along the inner portion). The elongated pockets 10 may extend across the outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1, and may be formed integrally therewith. The elongated pockets 10 may also be formed of the stretchable polyester blended fabric or a blend of polyester, lycra-type elastane and nylon.

Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, each elongated pocket 10 has a closed end 21 (see FIG. 3) and an open end 22 such that weight members 14 (see FIG. 4) can be securely inserted therein. More specifically, the elongated pockets 10 may be stitched to the outer portion 8 on three sides thereof (i.e., except for a side that corresponds to the open end 22). A first plurality of VELCRO portions 23 are disposed on top portions of the elongated pockets 10 adjacent to the respective open ends 22 thereof. The outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1 further includes a plurality of closing flaps 13 attached thereto and being adjacent to the open ends 22 of the elongated pockets 10. The closing flaps 13 have a second plurality of VELCRO portions 24 that correspond to the first plurality of VELCRO portions 23 on the elongated pockets 10 such that the first and second VELCRO portions 23 and 24 engage each other to close the elongated pockets 10, when the closing flaps 13 are folded over the open ends 22 of the elongated pockets 10. Accordingly, a user of the sleeve 1 can easily and conveniently adjust a number of the weight members 14 (see FIG. 4) disposed in the elongated pockets 10 of the sleeve 1. As illustrated in FIG. 3, the closing flap 13 is moved along the solid line arrow over the open end 22 of the elongated pocket 10 to secure the weight member 14 (see FIG. 4) within the elongated pocket 10 as also illustrated in FIG. 2.

Referring to FIG. 2, the outer portion 8 has an elongated pocket arrangement having the elongated pockets 10 attached thereto. The elongated pockets 10 are disposed in a continuous adjacent manner such that each adjacent pair of the elongated pockets 10 has a common boundary line (i.e., without a space) disposed therebetween. The continuous arrangement of the elongated pockets 10 contours to the limb of a user and allows the weight members 14 (see FIG. 4) disposed in the elongated pockets 10 to rest along a portion of the limb. Accordingly, the user does not experience discomfort, since the weight members 14 (see FIG. 4) are arranged on the limb in a contouring manner due to the continuous arrangement of the elongated pockets 10 and the flexibility of the weight members 14. Additionally, more weight can be comfortably worn in the sleeve 1 due to the continuous arrangement of the elongated pockets 10.

The elongated pockets 10 may vary in shape and size according to the different sizes of the sleeve 1. It should be understood that the arrangement and number of the elongated pockets 10 as illustrated and described is not intended to limit the scope of the present general inventive concept. For example, the number of elongated pockets 10 may be 2, 3, 4, etc depending on, for example, the size and purpose of the sleeve.

Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the sleeve 1 includes a two part hook and loop fastening system disposed on the outer portion 8 at both sides thereof in the length direction of the sleeve 1. In particular, the outer portion 8 has a first elongated receiving pad 2 (e.g., VELCRO fastener) disposed at a first side (i.e., a right side of FIG. 2) of the outer portion 8 extending in the length direction of the sleeve 1 along the perimeter portion 4. The outer portion 8 further includes a second plurality of receiving pads 3 (e.g., VELCRO fasteners) disposed at the first side between the first elongated receiving pad 2 and the elongated pockets 10. The second receiving pads 3 may be spaced apart from the first elongated receiving pad 2, or may extend from the first elongated receiving pad 2. The second receiving pads 3 may have a square shape, and the first elongated receiving pad 2 may have a rectangular shape. Alternatively, other shapes may also be used which provide the intended purposes as described herein. The first elongated receiving pad 2 is arranged to be parallel to the elongated pockets 10. The first and second receiving pads 2 and 3 may be VELCRO fuzzies or VELCRO loops.

The inner portion 5 includes a first elongated hooking pad 6 (e.g., VELCRO hook) disposed on a second side (i.e., a left side of FIG. 2) of the sleeve 1 opposite to the first side of the sleeve 1 to correspond to the first elongated receiving pad 2 disposed on the outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1. The first elongated hooking pad 6 is illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 as a dashed line representing an outline thereof in the outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1, even though the first elongated hooking pad 6 is actually disposed on the inner portion 5.

The two part hook and loop fastening system further includes a plurality of straps 11 arranged along the second side of the outer portion 8 opposite to the first side of the outer portion 8. The plurality of straps 11 have a first end attached to the outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1 adjacent to the elongated pockets 10, and a second end extending outside of the perimeter portion 4 of the sleeve 1. The second ends of the straps 11 have second hooking pads 9 (e.g., VELCRO hooks) to engage the second receiving pads 3 (i.e., the second VELCRO fasteners 3). The straps 11 include an elastic band disposed between the first and second ends thereof to allow the straps 11 to be securely coupled to the second receiving pads 3 to apply a desired pressure on the limb. That is, the elastic band can be stretched with respect to the outer portion 8 to move the second hooking pads 9 disposed at the second ends of the straps 11 to various positions. The first end of the straps 11 can be secured to the outer portion 8 of the sleeve 1 via a stitched portion 7. The straps 11 extend from the stitched portion 7 in a width direction of the sleeve 1 that is perpendicular to the length direction (i.e., along which the first elongated receiving pad 2 and the elongated pockets 10 extend). The first elongated hooking pad 6 and the second hooking pads 9 of the straps 11 may be VELCRO hooks or fuzzies.

The two part hook and loop fastening system extends along both sides of a length of the sleeve 1 (i.e., in the length direction) perpendicular to a width of the sleeve 1 (i.e., in the width direction). The first elongated hooking pad 6 and the first elongated receiving pad 2 may extend to a length of between four and eight inches long and between one and two inches wide depending on a size of the sleeve 1. The straps 11 may extend to a length of between two and four inches long, again depending on the size of the sleeve 1. As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the straps 11 extend in the width direction of the sleeve 1 over a part of the outer portion 8 that corresponds to a part of the inner portion 5 having the first elongated hook 6. The straps 11 may be arranged along a top, center, and a bottom of the sleeve 1 to provide a maximum support and stability when secured on the limb of a user. In addition, since the straps 11 include the elastic band disposed between the first and second ends thereof, the two part hook and loop fastening system can be secured tightly.

The two part hook and loop fastening system operates as follows. When the user places a limb along the length direction of the inner portion 5 of the sleeve 1, the first and second sides of the sleeve 1 can be brought together around the limb such that the sleeve 1 is wrapped around the limb of the user. The first and second sides of the sleeve 1 are then coupled together around the limb and are attached by fastening the first elongated hooking pad 6 to the first elongated receiving pad 2 and fastening the straps 11 to the second receiving pads 3. In other words, the second side of the sleeve 1 (i.e., having the first elongated hooking pad 6 and the straps 11 of the left side of FIG. 2) is wrapped over top of the first side of the sleeve 1 (i.e., having the first elongated receiving pad 2 and the second receiving pads 3 of the right side of FIG. 2) such that a part of the inner portion 5 can be disposed on top of the outer portion 8 at the second side of the sleeve 1. The first elongated hooking pad 6 is fastened to the first elongated receiving pad 2 to form a first fastening arrangement (i.e., including a VELCRO coupling portion), and the straps 11 are fastened to the second receiving pads 3 to form a second fastening arrangement (including a plurality of VELCRO coupling portions). Accordingly, the sleeve 1 is securely fastened to the limb of the user such that the inner portion 5 does not slide around the limb of the user, and slippage is therefore prevented.

Although the two part hook and loop fastening system is illustrated and described as having VELCRO, it should be understood that other types and arrangements of fasteners may also be used which provide the intended purposes described herein. Additionally, VELCRO loops and fuzzies that are used as the receiving pads (e.g., 2 and 3) and the hooking pads (e.g., 6 and 9) may be interchanged with each other such that a variety of pairing arrangements may be used. For example, the receiving pads (e.g., 2 and 3) may be VELCRO loops while the hooking pads (e.g., 6 and 9) may be VELCRO fuzzies such that the fuzzies are removably coupled together with the loops.

FIG. 4 is a view illustrating the weight member 14 used in the weighted sleeve 1 of FIGS. 1 and 2 and the elongated pocket 10 of FIG. 3, according to an embodiment of the present general inventive concept. The weight member 14 includes a lining 16 having one or more stitched portions 17. The lining 16 contains a plurality of beads 15 to provide a weight of the weight member 14. That is, the weight member 14 is self-contained, and a shape thereof can be adjusted due to movement of the beads 15 within the lining 16. The adjustability of the shape of the weight member 14 enables the user to move the weight member 14 into a desired position on the limb by moving the beads 15 within the lining 17 and enables free range of motion. The lining 16 may be a container, a sack, a bag, or a packet. The beads 15 may be steel beads or other weights, and the lining 16 may be a nylon fabric that prevents ripping, thereby securing the beads 15 therein. Additionally, the stitched portions 17 reinforce the lining 16. Accordingly, the weight member 14 can be easily slidably inserted/removed to/from the elongated pockets 10 of the sleeve 1. Each weight member 14 may be between about ½ pound (lb) and about 1 pound (lb). Thus, depending on a number of elongated pockets 10 (e.g., 3) different amounts of weight can be worn in the sleeve 1.

Referring to FIGS. 1 to 4, the sleeve 1 may be made in a variety of shapes and sizes (e.g., XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, etc.) according to a size of a user of the sleeve 1. The weighted sleeve 1 may be fastened using the two part hook and loop fastening system on a desired part of the limb, or may be fastened on the limb and then slid into position at the desired part of the limb. In this manner, the inner portion 5 of the sleeve 1, which may be made of fleece, does not irritate the skin on the limb. Alternatively, the two part hook and loop fastening system can be secured, and the user can then slide the sleeve 1 over a hand or foot to the desired part of the limb. The sleeve 1 can be worn on any part of the user's leg or arm including, for example, above a wrist, above an ankle, above an elbow, or above a knee. Additionally, the sleeve 1 may be comfortably worn such that a weighted portion defined by the elongated pockets 10 can rest against a muscle of the limb (i.e., not a shank of the limb) or rest around a bone of the limb (i.e., around the shank of the limb as opposed to against the shank of the limb). In other words, due to the contouring manner of the continuous arrangement of elongated pockets 10, the sleeve 1 can be worn comfortably on different parts of the limb, and the contouring manner of the elongated pockets 10 avoids placing weight directly on the bone of the limb even when the sleeve 1 is worn such that the continuous arrangement of the elongated pockets 10 is disposed around the bone.

Accordingly, a weighted sleeve according to the embodiments of the present general inventive concept may be comfortably and stably worn on a desired part of a limb due to an arrangement and distribution of flexible weight in elongated pockets, specific materials used for inner and outer portions of the sleeve, and a two part hook and loop fastening system used to secure the sleeve to the limb.

Although a few embodiments of the present general inventive concept have been shown and described, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that changes may be made in these embodiments without departing from the principles and spirit of the general inventive concept, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims and their equivalents.
