INTRODUCTION

In the past we have noted a number of trends in recent film criticism that have been reflected in the special issues topics of various journals. For 2006 we might point to The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism's number on Film and Philosophy, which parallels several recent books on the subject, and to film & History's two-issue examination of War in Film, obviously a topic very much in public discussion. The primary trend, though, is clearly focused on the international film scene, as is evidenced by, among others, Cineaste's portfolio of pieces on Iranian cinema, Post Script's special issue on Indian Cinema, and Sight and Sound's number offering an overview of the current German film industry. Other special issues worth noting include the Canadian Journal of Film Studies' number devoted to Canadian television and Cineaste's special issue on acting. Other developments we might observe, because they will obviously signal the appearance of increased essays in their areas of interest, are the appearance of the new journal Animation, published by Sage Publications, the announcement of the publication beginning in 2008 of Science Fiction film and Television, published by Liverpool University Press, and the relaunch of In tensities: The Journal of Cult Media, based at Brunel University.

Not subject to such trends, the Annual Bibliography retains the format that has been employed for many years, including those categories that have demonstrated their usefulness. Each English-language film article receives a single full citation, based on the current MLA style, although many of the entries are also cross-referenced to one or more additional categories. Where necessary, entries also receive a brief annotation. Except in the cases of the "Actors / Actresses" and "Directors" categories, entries are alphabetized according to the authors' last names, and we abbreviate journal citations according to the "Periodicals Indexed" listing that follows. As in the past, we continue to invite any suggestions our readers might have for streamlining the format, adding additional journals, or employing other categories.

I would also note that the production of this research tool remains very much a group effort. There are a number of colleagues that I have called upon to furnish missing journals, but I especially want to thank co-editor Gerald Duchovnay for his assistance in locating needed materials and gently prodding the completion of this year's Annual Bibliography.
