As the '90s begin, highly sophisticated additives technology
is commonplace. New products abound, as additives are recognized as
essentials in the quest for higher-performance, more durable, and
lower-cost plastic end-products. Companies merge, new plants are built.
And the spotlight is trained on environmental issues: Chlorofluorocarbon
(CFC) blowing agents are on the way out. Is biodegradibility a viable
option? What does the future hold for heavy metal pigments?
Company by company, then, PE presents its 1990 additives roundup -

AIR PRODUCTS AND
The new Dabco 1027 and 1028 catalysts are said to improve processing
of microcellullar polyurethane foams, in products such as shoe soles and
integral skin. Both catalysts have the same highly reactive chemical
component but differ only in concentration and diluent. Because they
affect demold time only, they are designed to be blended with other
Dabco catalyst systems to obtain a wide range of both demold and cream

Last year, Akzo Chemicals Inc. introduced a line of non-cadmium
Interstab heat and light stabilizers for flexible and semirigid PVC
compounds. Barium-zinc liquids LT-4780 and LT-4781 are designed
primarily for clear and moderately filled formulations. Barium-zinc
liquids LT-4752, LT-4775, and LT-4785 function well in medium-to-soft
compounds at medium-to-high filler levels. LT-4797 and LT-4798,
essentially pH variations of LT-4780 and LT-4781, are for
general-purpose clear and filled formulations. LT-4800 and LT-4801 are
barium-zinc/epoxidized soy bean oil blends; each is said to offer
excellent performance in general-purpose clear or moderately filled
flexible formulations where the processor desires the economy and ease
of an ESO blend. LT-4805 is a high efficiency liquid
barium-zinc-phosphite heat stabilizer designed for high shear processes.
Interstab barium cadmiums include BC-4748, a high efficiency barium
cadmium metal soap stabilizer for use in high clarity flexible PVC
products, reported to provide excellent clarity and sparkle with a
minimum of haze; BC-4754, an ultrahigh-metal-content liquid soap for
both clear and opaque calendering, formulated to provide low plate-out
while still providing moderate lubrication; BC-4758, formulated for
automotive floor mats, said to perform well in both clear and opaque
formulations, and reported to provide excellent heat stability and good
viscosity, aging control, and low plate-out; and BC-4769A, a lubricating
liquid metal carboxylate for high shear opaque applications requiring
early color control.
Interstab calcium zincs for food-contact PVC applications include
CZL-715, CZL-720, and CZL-720A. The latter two are primarily intended
for stabilization of flexible PVC food-contact articles such as extruded
or blown film, FDA tubing, and molded plastisol items. All three of
these thermal stabilizers are pumpable, pourable, high-flash-point
liquids with very low volatiles content.
Akzo's Stanclere tin stabilizers include T-5507, for PVC
formulations pigmented from light pastels to dark earth tones; T-4791,
for rigid PVC foam extrusion; T-4743, for weatherable PVC applications;
and T-4759, a high efficiency, modified estertin for extrusion of PVC

Allied-Signal's A-C Performance Additives business has
introduced ACtone color enhancers, a line of additives that reportedly
allow compounders to improve color intensity at reduced cost. The
company says the additives offer a range of benefits that include the
ability to reduce usage of Quinacridone pigments by 50% and still
maintain tint. They are also said to increase the fluorescence of
fluorescent dyes and pigments while preventing plate-out. Other
properties include improved wetout, thereby preventing particle
agglomeration; improved separation of water from press cake in the
production of color concentrate; higher pigment loadings while
maintaining lower viscosity; and a compatibility with certain base
resins that eliminates striation and leaves physical properties

AluChem Inc. has developed samples of a naturally occurring magnesium
hydroxide filler. Known as ACMH-93, the material is reportedly a little
less expensive than comparable synthetic or precipitated materials. The
firm intends to offer both an untreated and treated grade for
higher-threshold-temperature plastics applications. The firm also offers
a mechanically ground, superfine grind alumina trihydrate filler, which

American Cynamid Co. has introduced the dB900 series of conductive
Dry-Blend NCG (nickel-coated graphite) fiber plastics additives. NCG
fiber reportedly provides injection molded thermoplastic parts with
cost-effective protection from EMI, RFI, and ESD. The firm's
Dry-blend dB910 NCG fiber concentrate is reported to be compatible with
PC, PC/ABS blends, ABS, and nylon. Said to be
"molder-friendly" and as easy to use as color concentrates, it
has a proprietary binder specifically tailored to the host resin. Each
1/4-in-long pellet contains 12,000 individually plated NCG fiber
filaments. According to the company, the user simply has to add the
appropriate amount of dB910 concentrate to the resin, then blend in the
same manner as regrind material, in order to achieve cost-effective,
molded-in EMI/RFI shielding. When drying or vacuum loading, the dB910
concentrate can be handled in the same manner as blended resin. (See PE,

Ampacet Corp. has introduced Process Aid Concentrate 10919 to
eliminate sharkskin or die chatter at levels of use lower than those of
other process aids currently on the market. The concentrate is a 3%
concentration of a new fluoro-elastomer-based additive that is
compatible with most resins prone to melt fracture. It is said to be
especially effective in polyolefins containing antiblock agents or other
inorganic additives, which have occasionally proven to detract from
process aid performance.
Concentrate 30985 is a new photodegradable additive that extends
Ampacet's line of degradable additive concentrates. The product
reportedly enhances the degradability of polyolefins resins without the
usual orange tint that accompanies the use of other photodegradable
additives. Product 30985 is LDPE-carried, and is recommended for use at
2% to 5%, depending on degree of degradability desired.
Ampacet has also developed a new additive concentrate, product
10967, for use in the reprocessing of biodegradable film. Because of the
tendency of its component cornstarch to absorb 10% to 12% moisture,
biodegradable film is difficult to extrude without creating voids from
the flashing off of moisture at elevated temperatures. The concentrate
is designed for critical applications that require the trapping of
moisture or other volatilization. Made with a blended carrier system, it
is said to be compatible with virtually all polyolefin applications, and
has reportedly proven beneficial to the manufacturers of biodegradable
film who recycle their edge trim.
Ampacet's pigment yellow 13794 is an organic yellow colorant
that is FDA-acceptable for food contact. Developed for the blown and
cast film industries, it has become known as "chicken diaper
yellow" because of its popular use in absorbent pads packaged with
chicken. The colorant is said to be cost-effective and to have good heat
stability; it reportedly exhibits the same superior opacity and color
values of lead chrome colorants. Although lead chromate has been the
yellow colorant of choice for processors, it has had a disadvantage of
not being FDA-acceptable for food contact.
During the latter part of 1989, Ampacet inaugurated a $20 million
expansion of its Terre Haute, Ind., color and additive concentrate
plant. The expansion brings the facility's annual capacity to 250
million lbs. The Terre Haute operation produces a wide range of additive
concentrates, including degradables, flame retardants, foaming agents,
UV absorbers, antistats, slip additives, anti-oxidants, antiblock
agents, carbon black, and multifunctional formulations. The plant
expansion gives Ampacet the ability to supply more than 60% of total
U.S. requirements for polyolefin additive and color concentrates.

Amspec Chemical Co. has introduced two formulated flame retardants,
Amsperse F/R 21 and F/R 51. The two materials are described as
concentrated aqueous dispersions of antimony trioxide and
decabromodiphenyl oxide, and are used in conjunction with a suitable
polymeric adhesive binder. They are reportedly applied by a variety of
methods to a multitude of substrates. Amsperse F/R 21 is said to be
particularly suitable for cellulosic substrates or cellulosic/synthetic
blends. Amsperse F/R 51, on the other hand, is more suited to 100%
synthetic materials, such as polyesters, polyamides, and polyolefins.

Atochem North America says that the FDA has approved three tin-based
esterification catalysts for resins used in food contact applications.
Fascat 9100, 9102, and 9201, the company says, can lower reaction times
by as much as 3:1. The principal food-grade applications include
equipment for preparation and serving of food: polyesters for tanks,
liners, and piping in food processing plants; microwave ware, including
frozen food trays; and powder coatings. The catalysts can also
accelerate reactions in polyester hybrid compounds and systems.
Atochem North America was formed at the beginning of this year by
the merger of Atochem Inc., M&T Chemicals, Inc., and Pennwalt Corp.

Avecor, Inc., has introduced a series of liquid-phase colorants for
stretch blowmolded PET bottles and jars. The line of opaque colors,
applications for which involve packaging and cosmetics, includes a
custom made, high gloss "White-White." Because of their
ability to be injected directly into the feed mechanism of molding
machines, the materials reportedly produce excellent dispersion
qualities while maintaining a high gloss appearance. They also
reportedly eliminate problems associated with moisture pickup and

Mono-Coat semipermanent mold release agents by eliminating
chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) solvents from the agents. The firm has also
introduced a number of water-based release agents to eliminate

extensively field tested under a variety of production conditions, and
are said to provide excellent multiple releases with superior part

Chroma Corp. has introduced an LDP (low dust potential) line of
dustless dry colors in granular form that are suitable for all
thermoplastic resins. The resinated granular system enables the colors
to be used without problems such as screw caking and dryer melting. In
addition to minimizing the potential health risks associated with dry
colors, the lack of dust eliminates cross contamination between machines
and simplifies cleanup.
Stabilizer package M-9359 is formulated for reprocessed resins
recovered from recycling operations. It stabilizes melt flow, inhibits
gel formation, prevents yellowing, and is said to be very cost-effective
when used at the suggested high use rate.
A new line of fluorescent dry colors, formulated for polyolefins,
consists of Hot Magenta, M-34350; Tangerine Orange, M-34360; Flame Red,
M-34370; Brite Yellow, M-41440; Fluorescent Plum, M-53340; and Hot Lime

Suitable combinations of inorganic synergists incorporated into PVC
wire and cable compounds, and without additional halogen, have resulted
in OI values greater than 33 and smoke reductions of more than 50%. The
company says that use of its zinc borates and molybdenum compounds
should enable PVC compounders to meet the most stringent code

Cookson Pigments has introduced improved versions of two Endurophthal
CPC phthalocyanine blues, BT-597-D and BT-649-D. Both promise improved
dispersibility and heat stability up to 500 [Degrees] F in polyolefins.
A naphthanil red RT-170-D has been introduced for use in
polypropylene fibers; it may also be used in low- and high-density

Crowley Chemical Corp. reports no brand new products, but says that
its Viplex 885 polyester resin modifier is finding use in pultrusions,
improving wetout of resin to fiberglass by a factor of 3, improving
tensile and flexural strength, heat distortion, and impact resistance,

Cyprus Industrial Minerals has introduced a line of talc products
that, when added at levels of up to 50%, reportedly enhance the
stiffness and heat distortion values of polyolefins. Marketed under the
trade name of Stellar Talc, these products are said to offer a high
level of optical brightness and color and are certified as being free of
asbestiform minerals. Automotive and appliance parts, as well as retort
packaging, are among their applications.
Cyprus has also introduced Stellar 500, a talc product said to
provide excellent antiblock performance in PE films such as shopping and
trash bags. The product reportedly affords good film clarity and color
and eliminates the environmental dangers of silica antiblocks. When used
in higher concentrations, the company says, it produces "a softer
feel" in polyolefin film. It, too, is certified as being free of
Stellar 600 and Mistron 699X are two of the firm's new
ultrafine platy talc products, said to offer superior impact performance
in polyolefin parts. Their median particle size, 1 to 2.5 microns,
reportedly optimizes particle packaging and provides improved particle
strength. They are recommended for use in impact copolymers for
automotive interiors and bumpers and for microwavable dishware. Recent
investigations have demonstrated their effectiveness in compatibilizing
PET and HDPE.
Last February in Houston, at SPE's Regional Technical
Conference on reinforcement, impact modification, and nucleation of
polymers, Oscar F. Noel III and William P. Steen of Cyprus Industrial
Minerals presented a paper on talc as a compatibilizing and reinforcing
agent in the recycling of plastics. Specifically, PET and HDPE,
"two of the major components of post-consumer plastic waste,"
are incompatible. "Their blends exhibit inferior mechanical
properties and are difficult to process. But the addition of talc
eliminates the processing problems and significantly improves the
tensile modulus and stiffness without adversely affecting other

Day-Glo Color Corp. has introduced a variety of fluorescent colorants
in two different series. Its NX-pigments, offered in five shades,
represent an assortment of high strength colorants designed for use in
blowmolded PE bottles. The series reportedly offers substantially
reduced blowpin plate-out and much greater compatibility with
polyolefins. The firm's series of ZQ-pigments have reportedly been
found to work well in a wide range of applications, particularly those
involving injection molded parts; they can be used in PP and ABS.
Besides allowing higher pigment loading in concentrates, they are said
to reduce mold plate-out and have very good heat stability. A new
addition to the series is Horizon Blue Q-19, which is reportedly 50%

D.J. Enterprises offers Sillum-200-Q/P, a noncombustible, chemically
stable, inert alumina silicate. The free-flowing bead is said to be
easily blended with liquid or powder materials. It is non-thixotropic,
nonhygroscopic, water-resistant, and compatible with ATH. The product
possesses a high filler-loading capability (40%-60%), excellent
suspension and dispersion qualities, and lower viscosity. It is also
reported to reduce shrinkage and exotherm temperature and to improve

The Du Pont Co. has developed a new line of six Teflon
fluoroadditives for thermoplastics and elastomers. Each reportedly
imparts fluoropolymer properties, such as lubricity and nonstick
characteristics, to a variety of industrial and consumer products,
including moving plastic parts in business machines. Although they
differ slightly in particle size distribution, surface area, molecular
weight, and suggested applications, all are white, free-flowing powders
that are inert to nearly all industrial chemicals and solvents. They
have smaller particle size than do other grades of Teflon and can be
readily incorporated into other materials. The additives are said to be

Eastman Chemical's introductions include the following products.
The higher densities of the new Epolene 20 series of polyethylene waxes
provide better melting profile matches with base resins, improving their
effectiveness as dispersing aids for color concentrates and lubricants
for PVC extrusion and polyolefins. The oxidized version provides
improved clarity in PVC.
Eastman inhibitor HHBP, 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-hydroxybenzophenone,
is a new UV absorber/inhibitor for flexible PVC, ABS, PS, PC, and PVB.
It is said to provide excellent permanence and protection compared with
other benzophenones and benzotriazoles. Eastobrite OB-1 optical
brightener, bis (benzoxazolyl) stilbene, is available as a powder and
masterbatch and promises excellent heat and light stability at
outstanding cost/performance for thermoplastic polyesters, ABS, nylon,
EVA, and PS.
Aquastab additive delivery systems allow additive incorporation to
polymers without melting or compounding by forming a strong additive
coating via the topical application of various additives from aqueous

ECC America Inc. has introduced three new products; Snowpak, an
intermediate-sized ground calcium carbonate; Granifil, a natural granite
mineral product designed to produce a "granite look" in
cultured marble products; and Ecca-Tal 325P, a natural talc product that
imparts black color to compounds.
Snowpak is designed to generate high filler loadings and low paste
viscosity in glass-reinforced polyester thermoset systems such as SMC
and BMC. By providing high efficiency particle packing and low surface
area, the product provides low resin demand and, consequently, low
viscosity in unsaturated polyester systems regardless of whether filler
loading levels are high or low.
Granifil is a granite filler used in open mold systems (cultured
marble) to develop a granite appearance in the molded part. It is said
to contain a minimum of fine dust and a maximum of chip-like granite
particles, thus allowing for higher loadings and effectively achieving
the granite look. It is a neutral-colored product reportedly capable of

Ecca-Tal 325P produces a black-colored compound when added to
polyolefins; this characteristic can reduce or eliminate the use of

Early this year, Engelhard brought out its new Meteor Plus line, a
series of fine-particle, mixed metal oxide pigments intended for coil
coatings and building products. Especially suited for architectural
plastics, such as rigid PVC for vinyl siding, the pigments are reported
to greatly improve weatherability - even the darker colors, which are
otherwise known to weather easily.
The color spectrum of the new line ranges from light yellow to
conventional browns and blacks, with the exception of red. Some are new;
some are modifications of existing products. Coming soon: a high
strength jet black and a high strength brown. Cobalt aluminum-based teal
blue and green, according to technical service manager Subhash Lele, are
bright and attractive, without the "dirtiness" commonly
associated with those colors; they are also capable of long-term
exposure to sunlight without the deficiencies of organic colors.
Among other features of the Meteor Plus line are the high heat
stability inherent in mixed metal oxides; the availability of
infrared-resistant pigments; good dispersion (average particle size is
less than 2 microns); and, as indicated above, a wider color spectrum
than has previously been available. Other suggested applications are in
automotives, appliances, and fibers.
At ANTEC in Dallas last month, Engelhard introduced ThermoBrite
cadmium pigments, five yellows and six reds, which pass the ISO TC35
test for very low residues. The company says that it will soon offer
reduced-dust versions of most of its other cadmium pigments as well.
Asked why Engelhard is bringing out new cadmium pigments now, in the
face of possible legislation regarding cadmium products, Carlton
Johnson, business manager for the company's color business, said
that he believes cadmium will not be banned; he compared the cadmium
situation with that of lead chromate, for which the market is still
viable some fifteen years after people thought it would dry up. He
reiterated that this is a low-dust product, and he emphasized the
company's unwillingness to abandon a product line that its

its Translink HF-900 reinforcement, a surface-modified calcined
kaolin-based product introduced at NPE '88 (see PE, August 1988, p.
33), has recently found new applications in automotive headlamp
housings, where high heat deflection temperature is essential, and in
building products and under-the-hood auto parts. Plastics market manager
Jeffrey Carr further reports that Ultralink PA-100 reinforcement, also
introduced at the last NPE, has found use in numerous nylon products.
PA-100, which uses a patented surface treatment technology that
chemically tailors the surface of the mineral to the resin system,
offers a higher impact property that conventionally treated calcined

Enimont's Uvasil 299 is a new silinated hindered amine light
stabilizer that is said to be transparent to UV light, resistant to
extractions and volatilization, and capable of high thermal stability.
It reportedly provides excellent stability for fibers, tapes, and thick
sections such as molded parts in natural and pigmented systems. In
addition to its liquid form, the product is available in solid form on

Ferro Corp.'s Plastic Colorants and Dispersions Division has
introduced a line of heavy metal-free, low-plate-out fluorescent color
concentrates designed for polyolefin packaging applications. The line
reportedly offers improved molding productivity, permitting up to three
times the number of molding cycles before mold cleaning than did earlier
systems. The concentrates are also said to provide higher opacity and
tinctorial strength, and improved physical properties that offset
cracking nd pinholing/ Ferro Corp., Plastic colorants and dispersions

Ferro has also developed a new heat stabilizer system to meet
automotive industry requirements for instrument panels, and a series of
new cadmium-free heat stabilizers for calendering and extrusion
applications. The Ferro ExtendeVd Peformance system is a heat stabilizer
system is a heat stabilizer system having application to instrument
panels that do not exhibit color change after 21 days at 25 [degrees] F.
Therm-Check 196 poweder, when used at recommended levels in combination
with Therm-Chek 923 powder and Therm-Chek 128 or Therm-Chek 129 liquids,
reportedly provides sufficient amine-stain resistance and physical
property retention to meet the requirements of the automotive industry.
The system is suitable for vinyl slush molding dryblends and vinyl alloy
systems. The firm's series of cadmium-fre heat stabilizers includes
therm-Chek 120 and 145 liquids,which are said to generate a balance of
good early color hold and process heat stability in clear extrusion
applications; Therm-Chek 127 liquid for highly filled extrusion

Frekote Mold Release Products, a business units of Dexter Corp., has
introduced a broad line of non-CFC mold release agents said to be
environmentally friendly. The new line reportedly includes a new
Frekote-NC (for Non-CFC) product for "every type of mold release
application" as an alternative to standard Frekote and other mold
release agents that contain CFCs. Although all of the base ingredients
of the new line are identical to those of Frekote's standard
products, trichlorotrifluoroethane has been removed from the solvent
carrier and replaced with aliphatic hydrocarbons. Such performance
characteristic as wetting, film formations, and drying rates are

Blendex 590 process aid, a new member of GE Specialty Chemicals'
family of Blendex modifiers, was introduced last year. Intended for
applications such as foamed PVC profiles, Blendex 590 is said to offer
equivalent or better performance at lower concentrations than
conventional acrylic-based products. GE also says that the product
enables manufacturers to obtain higher hot strength, resulting in lower
density. Other potential applications include rigid (biaxially oriented)
and semirigid PVC that requires greater hot strength for processing.
Blendex 590 can be used in applications requiring food contact

The company's workhouse Ultranox 626 antioxidant has been
approved by the West German State Health Authority for certain food
packaging applications at specified maximum loading levels: 1.0% in PVC,
0.1% in polypropylene, and 0.25% in PET and polycarbonate. And the Swiss
Institute Registration and Consulting Co. indicates that Ultranox 626
can be used in polyethylene food packaging materials at up to 0.1%
loading. Approval for polyethylene in West Germany is still pending.
In January, GE Specialty Chemicals announced plans for a $23
million investment at their facility in Morgantown, W.Va Of that amount,
$19.5 million is earmarked for increased production capacity of Ultranox
626. Another $15 million investment, announced a few months earlier,
included a $7 million expansion at Morgantown and an $8 million

Percy Harms Corp. has reformulated its line of Slide mold releases by
removing CFCs from the products. The new CFC-free releases retain the
same active ingredients as the former versions and are said to be both

Henkel Corp. has developed Loxiol VGS 1809 costabilizing lubricant
for PVC/ABS alloys. The company says the product promises excellent
internal and external lubrication effects (thus only one lubricant is
necessary for total lubrication), improved flow, superior release,
dimensional stability, and good printability and adhesion. Further, VGS
1809 produces a costabilizing effect with tin mercaptide stabilizers,
thereby providing a potential of 25% to 30% stabilizer reduction. It is
especially suited for business machine housings and electrical enclosure
Loxiol VGE 1875 has been developed as an internal/external
lubricant for foamed PVC extruded profiles. This product is also a
costabilizing lubricant with tin mercaptide stabilizers, and 25% to 30%
stabilizer reduction is similarly possible.
The company reports that its Loxiol VGE 1884, VGE 1728, VGS 1877,
and VGS 1878 costabilizing lubricants for PVC (see PE, June 1989, p. 37)
have attained excellent commercial acceptance. High market acceptance is
also indicated for antistatic agents in the Dehydat line: VPA 1726 for
clear, rigid PVC; 80X for opaque, rigid PVC; 8316 for plasticized PVC;

Hitox Corp. of America has been active, releasing a number of new
Haltex Alumina Trihydrate, a line of filler/extenders that add
smoke-suppressive and flame-retardant qualities to a variety of
plastics, is available in five grades. Haltex 300 has large particle
size (94% retention on 325 mesh); it is produced by the Bayer Process,
yielding a 99.5% pure product. Haltex 318 is air classified to reduce
superfines - median particle size is 19 microns; main target markets are
fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP) and acrylic sheets, and it also has
applications in epoxies and powder coatings. Haltex 313, with a median
particle size of 13 microns, has the widest area of application,
including FRP, thermoplastics, urethanes, polyesters, PVC, adhesives,
sealants, carpet backing, latex, and rubber. Haltex 310, with a median
particle size of 10 microns, is especially suited for flexible PVC,
molded FRP, and phenolic molding; other product applications are
decorative acrylic sheets and castings, and PVC flexible wire, cable,
and rubber compounds. Haltex 304, the finest grade in the line, has a
median particle size of 4 microns.
Hitox has also introduced Bartex 80, an addition to its barium
sulfate line, promising high dry brightness/whiteness; average particle
size is 7 to 8 microns, and barium sulfate content averages 98.0%.
Two pigments are new: OSO 350M Synthetic Yellow Iron Oxide and OSO
NR 830M Natural Red Iron Oxide. The company says the yellow offers clean
color, with an iron content of 87% plus. Iron content of the red exceeds

Hoechst Celanese Corp. recently added several antistat concentrates
to its line of Hostastat Systems E additives: Products E 4751 and E 4353
have joined E 3952, E 3953, and E 3954, which were introduced last year.
All of these products have an active ingredient of sodium alkyl
sulfonate and a carrier resin of PS or ABS. They are said to reduce
surface resistivity and improve processability and pigment dispersions
in applications such as extruded or molded PS, HIPS, and ABS parts.
Hostastat System E 1906, which is based on lauryl amide in an LDPE
carrier, is reportedly less corrosive than the traditional alkyl amine
formulation and suitable for electronics applications such as parts for
personal computers; other applications include LDPE, HDPE, and those
requiring short static decay time at low humidity.
Hostastat System E 5951, another antistat concentrate, is based on
lauryl amide in a PP carrier. Its applications include PP and molded
parts and extruded sheet requiring short static decay time at low
Hostavin N 20 is a monomeric hindered amine (HALS) said to be
particularly suitable for applications requiring high resistance to
water extraction; applications include HDPE, PP, ABS, HIPS, and
The company has also added Exolit IFR 15 and Exolit IFR 21 to its
line of non-halogen flame-retardant additives. Exolit IFR 15 is an
intumescent charforming agent based on ammonium polyphosphate. It has
application in thermoplastic urethanes. Exolit IFR 21 is a non-drip
flame retardant that is also charforming and based on ammonium
polyphosphate; its applications include polyolefins and thermoplastic
elastomers. It is said to be effective in polymers with high processing
temperatures of up to 240 [Degrees] C.
The firm also reports the introduction of an additive package,
consisting of 0.4% of Hostanox 03 and 1% of Hostanox PAR 24, for the
recycling of nylon and polyester. The package reportedly prevents

Activex is the name of Huber's new endothermic chemical foaming
agent, which the company says can be used in virtually any polymer
system. It is available as a 100% active powder or as concentrates in
polymer compatible carriers. Useful in a wide variety of processes,

stress and warpage, uniform fine cell distribution, environmental
safety, better impact properties, fast degassing and painting, better

Last fall, PDI, a business unit of ICI Americas Inc., brought out two
liquid flame retardants: 84-00751 for all grades of polystyrene and
86-00751 for homopolymer and copolymer polypropylene. Each comprises
halogenated flame retardants, a stabilizer system, and a liquid vehicle
carrier. The company says that lubricating properties of the vehicle, in
both cases, improve resin flow with minimal effect on physical
properties, since the formulation is normally used at low letdowns of
4.5%, versus 6.7% for conventional pelletized flame-retardant
masterbatches. Both systems are aliphatic, so dioxins are not produced
upon burning, and light stability is said to be improved over
conventional aromatic systems. The liquid flame retardants also have
less heat history than pelletized masterbatches.
A year ago, PDI introduced Series 9000-P transparent and opaque
liquid colorants for PET stretch blowmolding. They are FDA-approved,
highly concentrated, and, the company says, fully compatible with all
PET resin formulations.
At the SPI Composites Institute's Conference and Expo '90
in February, the company introduced its latest technology in HMF (heavy
metal-free) colorants, which it says will be available in
"virtually 100% of the existing color pallet." Said to offer
excellent lightfastness and good chemical resistance, and to be
non-staining, HMF colorants can be applied to any polyester, epoxy, or
polyurethane system for any molding process, including SMC, BMC, gel
coats, pultrusion, or wet molding-preforms. They can be combined with

At the end of last year, ICI Polymer Additives introduced Atmer 164
antistat for polyurethanes; it is especially intended for medical,
packaging, electronic, and telecommunications applications. The company
says that Atmer 164, a synthetic amine-based cationic compound, can be
used for flexible, rigid, or elastomeric urethanes with minimal effect
on reactivity or final properties. It is also said to be highly
compatible with the full range of polyols.
The Atmer 7000 series was made available in the U.S. this spring,
after introduction in Europe a year ago. These "unique new
superconcentrates," the company says, achieve 50% or more active
ingredient loadings in a polymerspecific carrier. They are produced in
pellet and powder forms. Atmer 7001 is an antistat blend for injection
moldable polypropylene; 7002 is a single-component antistat formulation
also for injection moldable PP; 7006 is an antistat blend for PP film at
least 50 microns thick; 7101 is a single-component antifog/antistat
formulation for polyethylene film at least 50 microns thick; 7108 is a
single-component antifog formulation for LLDPE film at least 50 microns
thick; and 7202 is a single-component antistat formulation for injection
moldable high impact polystyrene. In addition, all of the 50% active

The new Ken-React NZ 66A and NZ 69 mercapto and thiofunctional
zirconate coupling agents enhance the rheological, physical, and
corrosion-resistance properties of carbon-black reinforced, sulfurcured
elastomers. By increasing the adhesion between the rubber compounds and
steel, Kevlar, and polyester tire cord, the coupling agents have also
proven beneficial in fiber-reinforced systems.

Laurel Industries, Inc., has introduced Ultrafine II, an antimony
oxide-based flame retardant that reportedly improves the impact
resistance and other physical properties of polymeric substrates. The
submicron flame retardant is said to have the smallest particle size of
any antimony oxide-based product; average particle size is 0.3 micron.
The company says that Ultrafine II enhances the formation of antimony
trihalide, thus reducing the amount of brominated or chlorinated fillers
needed to optimize flame retardancy. The product is reported to be ideal
for liquid phases of thermoset resins that require thorough dispersion
within the substrate before the system is hardened or cured; such resins
include unsaturated polyesters, epoxies, polyurethanes, and phenolics.

Lonza Inc. says its Glycolube AFA-1 offers improved antifog and
antistatic performance in PVC food wrap film. When used in such film, it
reportedly protects the color and consistency of meat products and

calcium stearate/paraffin lubricant systems in rigid PVC profile and

introduced Aqualease 6100, a new water-based mold release that
reportedly can replace solvent-based formulations "without the

The Mearl Corp. recently added four new nonmetallic gold pigments to

At SPI's Polyurethanes Conference last fall, Mobay Corp.
announced the introduction of Porofor Z, a water-based non-CFC blowing
agent for use in producing self-skinning reaction injection molded
polyurethane structural foams. A homogeneous paste composed of alkali
alumino silicate sieves, water, and a polyether polyol, the product is
said to permit a distinct skin to be formed while maintaining physical
properties of the foam. A disadvantage, Mobay reports, is that when the
paste is blended into any of the polyurethane foams the company
evaluated, phase separation of the paste from the blend eventually
occurs; constant agitation is necessary to keep the paste dispersed.
Porofor Z is intended as an environmentally safe substitute for CFC-11.
Two acrylate-styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA) impact modifiers are in
the works: Baymond A TP KU 3-2069 A and 3-2079 A. The former was
developed for use in manufacturing non-PVC dashboard coverings in
automobiles; the latter, intended for plasticized PVC sheeting, promises
improved heat resistance and thermoforming properties.
On another front, Mobay is in the process of building a
state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Bushy Park, S.C., for
producing high performance organic pigments. The more than $50 million
project is scheduled to be completed late next year. Mobay is the
leading U.S. producer of organic pigment for the automotive industry.

Monsanto Chemical Co.'s new Elix family of powder modifiers
enhances processability and heat, weather, and impact resistance of PVC.
The variety of applications includes business machine housings,
television backings, automotive components, electrical parts, pipes, and
profiles. Elix 100 is composed of butadiene-based impact modifiers. The
200 series, based on styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) and alpha
methylstryrene (AMS), improves processability and melt strength. The 300
series, which is based on styrenemaleic anhydride (SMA), is designed to
improve heat resistance of PVC. The Elix 400 series, with
acrylate-styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA) impact modifiers, improves UV

Morflex Chemical has introduced two patented plasticizers, Citroflex
B-6 (n-butyryltri-n-hexyl citrate) and Citroflex A-6 (acetyltri-n-hexyl
citrate), for use in flexible PVC medical articles that require a low
order of acute toxicity. Both plasticizers are non-aromatic,
nonphthalate, and made from natural components. Tests on Citroflex B-6
for peroxisome proliferation were negative. Physical properties imparted
to PVC are similar to those imparted by DEHP, and either plasticizer can
replace DEHP in formulations with minimal adjustments. PVC compounds

New additions to Morton's line of specialty magnesium chemicals
are ultrafine grades magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide.
Improved processing and lower smoke evolution are expected benefits of
their fine particle size. Compared with calcium carbonate, Elastocarb UF
magnesium carbonate (25 phr) reduced smoke by 60% in the flaming mode in
rigid PVC, and Versamag UF magnesium hydroxide (25 phr) reduced smoke by
27% and also resulted in longer process stability as measured by a Haake
curve vs. a standard grade of magnesium hydroxide.
One of Morton's leading solid biocides, Vinyzene SB-1 PS, a
5%-active agent available in a polystyrene pellet carrier, can now be
ground into a 35-mesh granular concentrate for easy formulation into
polyethylene resins for rotational molding, enabling many important

NYCO has introduced two new Wollastokup engineered reinforcements -
chemically surface-modified wollastonite products for both thermoplastic
and thermoset composites. G-RRIM Wollastokup meets current RRIM
specifications as a reinforcement additive and promises excellent
surface appearance, impact, and elongation properties to RRIM
composites. It is the sole specified reinforcement for fenders, fascia,

Plastisperse additives are a new line of virtually dust free, free
flowing, high pigment concentration, granular colorants for
thermoplastics, thermoplastic elastomers, and thermoset polyesters. Used
as a replacement for dry color, freeze-dried, or color concentrates,
Plastisperse colorants are said to be cost-effective, and they promise
to improve handling and housekeeping. The additives are designed to
adhere to the resin pellets, resulting in an even distribution of color
in the final part. Coated pellets can be air-veyed without appreciable
separation. Additives can be metered into the hopper or drum tumbled
with either pellets or powder resins. The company's compact P-2000

Ben Berkman, vice president for commercial development at PMS,
reports on three new product categories that he says represent the
initial result of the company's "commitment to becoming a
leader in the coloration of engineered thermoplastic resins and
alloys": a line of polybutylene terephthalate-based color
concentrates in standard NEMA colors for fiber optic cable buffer tubes;
nylon-based color concentrates for glass-filled nylon 6/6 resins; and
nylon-and polycarbonate-based color concentrates in standard NEMA colors
for the molding of electrical connectors.
The company's FluoroFast line (see PE, June 1989, p. 39),
specially designed fluorescent and organic pigment color concentrates,
promise significantly reduced plate-out on molds, blow pins, and
extruder screws, thereby reducing machine downtime for cleaning. PMS

unveiled four high-loading products, all in polyethylene carriers, that
increase percentage loadings versus competitive products, which the
company says improves supply and production economics: D26264, a
titanium dioxide, has an 80% concentration, compared with typical 50% to
60%; A27305, an inorganic filler antiblock additive, also features an
80% concentration; the 60% loading of carbon black concentrate B26669
compares with typical 40% to 50% concentrations; and fatty amide slip
additive A27018 increases the normal concentration from 5% to 10%.
The company also reports that it no longer uses cadmium pigments

LSC-50 UV-stabilizer concentrate provides UV protection to crystal
polystyrene in extruded or injection molded products equivalent to
commercial lightstable crystal polystyrene. The stabilizer is designed
to be blended in a 1:50 ratio with high heat crystal polystyrene.

Polyvel's new 10% fluoroelastomer concentrate processing aid for
LLDPE film production eliminates melt fracture and enables reductions in

C-200 is a clear, fragranced compound that can be injection molded
or extruded directly into parts or finished products and is supplied
both as a custom compound and concentrate in various fragrances and

PPG Industries has developed two new fiberglass rovings. Type 5510 is
a medium-hard roving for automotive and industrial grades of sheet
molding compound (SMC) in which molded parts are painted. It is also
designed to be used in pigmentable and thick molding compound
applications. The company says that 5510 offers complete package payout
and transfer; excellent choppability; minimum static, fuzz, and fly;
uniform glass content; low sheet loft; and high laminate physical
Type 5538 is visibly whiter than the company's previous
structural-grade SMC rovings, providing what the company says are
superior fiber hiding characteristics during wetout in pigmented
applications. The roving is also said to exhibit superior chopping
performance, lower sheet loft, and lower static levels during chopping,
enhancing processability. Type 5538 was created specifically for
structural applications, such as pickup truck boxes, automotive bumper
beams, and basketball backboards. It is said to be ideal for
applications using vinyl ester resin because of its contributing

Quantum Chemical's USI Division has introduced two Spectratech
concentrates with what it says is excellent processability to meet the
stringent demands of extrusion coating. CM88100 is a white, 50% titanium
dioxide-loaded concentrate in a polyolefin carrier resin having optimum
rheological properties. It is designed specifically for use in coating
flexible packaging at high temperatures and high line speeds.
CM 92626 is a black concentrate containing carbon black uniformly
dispersed in a high-flow base resin. It is also designed for elevated
temperatures and rapid line speeds and is suited for coating
photographic paper and packaging films. The USI Division has opened a

marketing color concentrates containing heavy metalbased pigments. These

Reed has introduced OmniColor, a line of color concentrates designed
to work in the space and inventory limitations of small-and medium-sized

Rohm and Haas has developed two new impact modifiers. Paraloid
EXL-3387 is a reactive all-acrylic core/shell toughener for imparting
extremely high impact strength to glass-filled and neat nylon 6 and
nylon 6/6 systems. Compounds are also said to exhibit excellent
weatherability, color retention, heat stability, and ease of processing.
The all-acrylic Paraloid KM-318F modifier is designed for cellular
vinyl applications such as foam-core pipe and extruded foam sheet, where

Stoner's new line of economical, environmentally acceptable
non-CFC mold release agents are said to provide more releases per
application and have better compatibility with solvent-resistant resins;
they also can be used in all molding processes. Products include E935, a
silicone release agent for food grade applications; E978, a paintable
food grade product; E965, a versatile and paintable clear liquid product
formulated for parts to be adhesively bonded or decorated; and E960, a

Polydis TR 016 and TR 060 are two new process aids designed
especially for highly loaded compounds. They are useful in assuring
uniform blending of fillers and in acting as internal lubricants at
process temperatures. TR 016 is a blend of a fatty acid and an amide.
The amide's hydrogen bonding sites enable it to act as a coupling
agent between the polymer and filler. TR 060 is a mixture of low
molecular weight, light colored aliphatic resins. Because its melt has a
natural tackiness, it acts as a binder at process temperatures.
Applications utilizing these materials include filled olefins, TPOs, and

Synpro's new non-cadmium stabilizer line includes Synpron 1901,
a general-purpose, barium-zinc liquid stabilizer that is epoxy
compatible and can also be used in flexible applications; Synpron 1950,
a high efficiency, barium-zinc liquid stabilizer that is useful in clear
and filled calendering and extrusion applications; Synpron 1960, a high
efficiency, barium-zinc liquid used mainly in filled calendering and

multipurpose compounding ingredient. Stable to 600 [Degrees] C,
nonhygroscopic, and insoluble in water and organic solvents, it is
available as a fine white powder that the company says is readily
dispersible and rapidly wetted. It exhibits strong adhesion to a wide
variety of semipolar engineering polymers, making it useful in high

Teknor Color Co. reports that its Color Crystals (see PE, August
1988, photo on p. 27, and p. 30) were used by an injection molder to
color safety helmets (see cover photo, this issue); the same molder then
discovered that the product could also be used in a hot melt adhesives
application. The company says that Color Crystals solved a shrinkage

Dynamar FX-5920 is a new, granular, freeflowing polymer processing
additive (PPA) that both aids in film production and the recycling of
these materials. At levels as low as 250 to 1000 ppm, the company says,
it can reduce or eliminate melt fracture, reduce extruder torque,
increase output, improve clarity and gloss, yield films with more
balanced bi-directional properties, and, by lowering apparent melt
viscosity, permit use of high strength resins on available equipment.
The PPA is useful in low melt index, film grade LLDPE and is reported to
be especially effective in polyolefin resins containing silica-based
blocking agents, titanium oxide-based pigments, and other inorganic
additives. Its stability over a wide temperature range and lack of
reactivity give it the capability of being reused and reprocessed over
the multiple production and extrusion cycles undergone in recycling. 3M,

In January, U.S. Borax began offering Firebrake ZB-Fine (XPI-192), a
zinc borate flame-retardant, smoke-suppressant, and anti-arcing agent.
The product is a fine grade of the firm's Firebrake ZB material and
is intended to replace Firebrake ZB in applications in which physical
properties of the substrate are of vital importance. It has a mean
particle size of 2 to 4 microns and reportedly can be used in PVC,
nylon, polyester, and polyolefin resins. Its applications include wired
cable, thin films, and adhesives.
The firm is also offering several experimental zinc borates.
XPI-187 is a dehydrated Firebrake ZB suitable for use in plastics that
are processed at temperatures of 290 [Degrees] C or higher. It has a
typical mean particle size of 5 to 10 microns. XPI-225, another fine
grade of Firebrake ZB, has a typical mean particle size of 3 to 5
microns and is reported to be a superior smoke suppressant. XPI-189 is a
submicron water dispersion of Firebrake ZB. It is intended as a partial
or complete replacement for colloidal antimony pentaoxide, and is
offered for use in flame-retardant textile and other latex systems. U.S.

Witco's Argus Div. has introduced a noncadmium, two-component
heat stabilizer system that enables vinyl materials to exceed auto
interior industry standards for heat degradation while providing unusual
resistance to polyurethane staining. Two combinations of barium-zinc
systems are offered, both based on the newly developed Mark 6045, which
is used with Mark 6042 for ABS/rubbermodified materials, or with Mark
6711 for plasticized homopolymer PVC materials.
Especially for the bottled water market, Argus now offers Mark
3074, a calcium-zinc heat stabilizer that is said to provide better
initial color retention in blowmolded PVC bottles along with low odor
and taste characteristics.
Argus reports increasing interest in t-amyl peroxybenzoate because
of its improved efficiency over the t-butyl compound. Offered as Esperox
5100, the peroxide is being used as an initiator for polystyrene,
polyethylene, acrylic coatings, and high temperature polyester molding
systems. Espercarb 840, a 98% di-2-ethyl peroxydicarbonate initiator, is
said to provide cost efficiencies in the polymerization of vinyl
chloride and its copolymerization with monomers such as vinyl acetate
and vinylidene chloride.
The properties of a promising nucleating agent for polypropylene,
sodium bis (para-t-butylphenyl) phosphate, were described at the
February 1990 RETEC in Houston. The product, expected to be
commercialized by Argus by the end of the year, provides excellent
thermal stability with little or no volatility at processing
temperatures, and its low solubility in common solvents may lead to FDA

oleochemical-based internal mold release agents to include a product for
