The invention concerns a method and a device for detecting operating states by laser reflectometry with high laser power over an extensive spatial zone. An optical beam is emitted by at least a first radiation device (11) in at least an optionally connectable optical conductor means (24) and at least a reflected beam outside the optical conductor means is detected to form a measurement signal. The invention aims at improving such a method and such a device so as to enlarge their field of application. Therefor, it consists in detecting, besides the measurement signal, either a interfering signal in case of a significant optical radiation leak outside the conductor means following damage or breakdown of the optical conductor means, or an operating signal when damage or breakdown of the optical conductor means has been excluded. In case the interfering signal is detected, the radiation power of the first radiation device is reduced to 35 mW or the first radiation device is switched off.
