Improved hair care compositions include an alkyl ethoxylate and a gel matrix which includes a cationic surfactant, a solid fatty compound, and water. The alkyl ethoxylate is of the formula R-O-(C2H4O)nH, where R represents an alkyl group having from about 1 to about 30 carbon atoms, and where n represents a number from about 1 to about 10. The weight average molecular weight of the alkyl ethoxylate is less than about 500 g/mol, and the HLB value of the alkyl ethoxylate is from about 5 to about 12. A novel process may form the improved hair care composition.
