A combined gas and steam turbine plant (10) for the production of useful energy, preferably electrical energy, comprises an open-system gas turbine section (12) with at least one turbine part (32) which drives a compressor (24) that compresses ambient air, said air being then directed through a combustion chamber (28), in which heat energy is supplied to the compressed ambient air, to the turbine part (32) and then returned to the ambient atmosphere after the performance of useful work. The plant (10) also comprises a steam turbine section (18) in which liquid ammonia, used as a working medium, is evaporated by the heat contained in the combustion gases in the turbine part (32) and then directed to a steam turbine (20) connected downstream, after which it is returned to the steam generator (34) after being condensed under increased pressure in a condensation unit (36) connected downstream of the steam turbine (20). The ambient air delivered by the compressor (24) is directed through a recuperator (26) which is connected upstream of the turbine part (32) and through which the combustion gases from the turbine part (32) pass before entering the steam generator (34). A part of the heat energy contained in the combustion gases is thereby transmitted to the air supplied by the compressor (24). The ammonia used as the working medium in the steam turbine section (18) is converted by evaporation from the liquid state to the supercritical gaseous state in the steam generator, which functions as a heat exchanger, by the heat energy still contained in the combustion gases from the turbine part (32) after their passage through the recuperator (26). The ammonia in the supercritical gaseous state is then expanded in the steam turbine (20) to a pressure corresponding to the ambient temperature.
