A gas safety valve (1) is provided which has a valve chamber (7) within a housing, and a gas inlet (3) and outlet (5) respectively communicating with an inlet (8) and outlet end (9) of the valve chamber (7). Valve means (14) are disposed in the valve chamber (7) for allowing gas to flow from the inlet (3) to the outlet (5) when the valve means (14) is in an open position, and preventing gas flow when the valve means (14) is in a closed position at either end of the valve chamber (7). A release valve (32) may be disposed between the inlet (3) and the valve means (14). The valve means may comprise a piston (14) having a tortuous gas transmitting opening (24, 25) therein, the resistance to gas flow caused by the tortuous opening (24, 25) rendering the valve means (14) responsive to slight variations in gas pressure differential between the inlet (3) and the outlet (5). Resilient means (17) are provided which extend between the outlet (9) and the valve means (14). The resilient means (17) urge the valve means (14) into the open position, and allow it to reversibly move to a closed position against the outlet (9) when the pressure differential between the inlet (8) and outlet (9) of the valve chamber becomes sufficiently high to overcome the resistance of the resilient means (17).
