Description:
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to gloves, and more particularly concerns motorcyclists' gloves constructed to aid the gripping of a motorcycle handle.
Conventional leather gloves used by motorcyclists are not easily bendable at their fingers, and as a consequence the cyclist must constantly exert finger pressure and hand pressure to grip the handle. This in turn causes stiffening and cramping of the hand, after a period of time on a motorcycle.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is a major object of the invention to provide a glove construction overcoming the above problems, while retaining glove finger receptacle flexibility. Basically, the invention is embodied in the combination with a sports glove having multiple finger receptacles and a hand receptacle of:
A. A BACKER LAYER HAVING MULTIPLE ELONGATED FINGER SECTIONS CORRESPONDING TO THE BACKS OF SAID GLOVE FINGER RECEPTACLES, AND A BACK HAND SECTION CORRESPONDING TO THE BACK OF THE GLOVE HAND RECEPTACLE,
B. THE BACKER FINGER AND BACK HAND SECTIONS RESPECTIVELY HAVING ATTACHMENT TO THE BACKSIDES OF THE GLOVE FINGER RECEPTACLES AND HAND RECEPTACLE TO IMPART THERETO A CONVEX CURVATURE AT THE PALM SIDE OF THE GLOVE AND CONFORMING TO THE USER'S HAND CURVATURE.
As will appear, the backer may consist of an elastomer, and the glove typically consists of leather or leather-like material; the attachment consists of stitching, preferably about the entire periphery of the backer; the backer finger sections are substantially narrower in width than the glove finger receptacles; the backer thickness uniform and about 1/8 inch; through holes in the backer hand section improving overall flexibility.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention, as well as the details of an illustrative embodiment, will be more fully understood from the following description and drawings, in which:
DRAWING DESCRIPTION
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of in cyclist's glove incorporating the invention; and
FIG. 2 is a section taken in elevation through the glove of FIG. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The sports glove 1 has multiple finger receptacles 3, as well as a thumb receptacle 4, all of which project forwardly from the hand receptacle 5. The glove may consist of leather or leather-like material, and is typically relatively tight fitting on the hand of the user, a motorcyclist for example.
In accordance with the invention, a backer layer or band 2 is provided to have multiple elongated finger sections 6 corresponding to the backs of the glove finger receptacles, and a back hand section 7 corresponding to the back of the glove hand receptacle. Further, the finger and back hand sections 6 and 7 of the layer 2 have attachment to the back sides of the glove finger receptacles and hand receptacle, to impart thereto a convex curvature at the palm side of the glove and conforming to the user's normal hand curvature. This condition is illustrated in FIG. 2, wherein a motorcyclist's hand grip 8 is also illustrated.
The backer may consist of an elastomer, such as sponge rubber, for example, and is characteristically about 1/8 inch thick, for best results. It must be no more than about 3/16 inch thick, so that finger and hand flexibility is preserved, to operate the motorcycle. Also, the attachment of the backer to the glove consists of stitching 9 along all edges of the backer, the stitches connecting the backer and glove and holding the glove in a naturally curved condition as seen in FIG. 2. The backer, at the same time, allows full flexing of the finger and hand receptacles. Note that the backer finger sections are typically substantially narrower in width than the glove finger receptacles, along their major lengths. Also, the finger receptacles closely fit the fingers, to preserve finger and hand flexibility, to operate the motorcycle. The thickness of the glove material is thus no greater than that of the backer, and normally less than backer thickness.
Stretchability and flexibility of the glove, with backer attached, is enhanced by provision of a hole or holes, as at 2', through the backer at the back hand section 7, proximate the stitch connected rear portion 7' thereof. Such a hole or holes extends crosswise of the hand section, along the major width thereof.
