Title:
GAME BOARD, ATTACHABLE GAME PIECES AND CARRYING CASE
United States Patent 3880429
Abstract:
A chess set comprising a board made of squares surfaced with hooked nylon of two different colors, and chess pieces bottomed with pieces of brushed nylon which hold the pieces in place on the chess board. The board is hinged along a center line to fold thereabout with the surface of the board having the squares forming the external sides of the folded board. A carrying case having guide members to receive the folded board is also provided. The board is carried within the case such that the external sides thereof are sufficiently spaced from the walls of the case so as to preclude interference by the walls of the case with pieces mounted on the external sides of the folded board.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is

1. A portable game board, and playing pieces, in which the playing pieces are located, in play, on the marked external playing surface of the game board,

Description:
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates to a chess set with means to hold the pieces in place on the chess board regardless of the physical orientation of the chess board.

The advantage of this invention is that a game of chess can be played when the chess set is placed on a sloped or on a vibrating surface.

A further advantage of this invention is that a game can be interrupted, the set stored, and the game continued subsequently, with assurance that the pieces were not moved.

The invention comprises a board covered with squares of hooked nylon of alternating colors, the board being of the shape of a conventional chess board. The bottom of each of the pieces of the chess set are fitted with pieces of brushed nylon covering their underside surfaces.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The objects and features of the invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, taken together with the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. 1 is a top view of the chess board;

FIG. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the chess board;

FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a chess piece;

FIG. 4 is a side view of the chess board in its folded position; and

FIG. 5 is a perspective of the carrying case of the set.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Turning now descriptively to the drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIG. 1 illustrates the chess board 10 to which square sections of hooked nylon material 12 have been attached. As shown in FIG. 1, the board 10 shaped as a square, having a length sufficient to hold 64 square pieces of nylon 12 side-by-side.

As shown in FIG. 2, the nylon squares 12 are of two contrasting colors, adjacent squares alternating in color. FIG. 3 illustrates a pawn 16, with its underside covered with a piece of brushed nylon 14. When the piece 16 is placed on the board 10, the brushed nylon 14 attaches to the hooked nylon 12 and the piece 16 is held fast. The board 10 can be folded in a fashion that allows the exterior surface of the board and the nylon squares 12 to be exposed, as shown in FIG. 4. The board 10 in the folded condition, with or without pieces 16 attached, can be placed in its case 18 as shown in FIG. 5. The case 18 has interior channels 20 to hold the board 10 firmly with the chess pieces 16 attached. The case is fitted with a hinged lid 22 with a handle 24 mounted on the outside of the lid 22. The lid 22 has a latch 26A attached which mates with a latch 26B attached to the side of the case 18 so as to hold the lid 22 in the shut position, as desired.

The invention may be made in the form of other board games played with movable pieces on a marked playing board such as checkers, draughts, lotto, bingo and Monopoly.

Since obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein, such modifications being within the spirit and scope of the invention claimed, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended as illustrative and not as limiting in scope.
