Abstract:
An espagnolette lock which, on the one hand, requires only low actuating forces and, on the other hand, permits the identical lock to be actuated by means of a cipher-bit key, a security cylinder, a cylinder olive or rotary grip, whereby various components must be interchanged, but in which the basic structure of the lock remains always unchanged. The lock includes an actuating pin of a nut formed so as to at least approximate a circular eccentric pin which, at least in proximity to the axis of symmetry of a locking plate, connects with the latter so as to, upon rotation of the nut through an angle of 180°, forcibly moves the plate out of its opened condition into its locking condition, and vise versa, and arrests the latter in the open-and locked positions.

Claims:
What is claimed is

1. Espagnolette lock for the right and left sided latching of doors, windows and the like, comprising a lock box; rotatably closure bar means extending through said lock box; a lock plate having interdigitating means adapted to operatively engage said closure bar means; a cover for said lock box; and nut means rotatably journaled in the wall of said lock box and in said cover, a recess being formed in said nut means adapted to receive a security cylinder, a rectangular through-hole in said nut means, and a slot in one side of said nut means for insertion of a key bit for actuation of said lock, said nut means having actuating cam means of approximately circular eccentric am configuration, said cam means engaging said lock plate in the region of the axis of symmetry thereof, so as to, upon rotation of said nut means about an angle of 180°, forcibly move said lock plate from an opened position to a locked position and conversely, and to arrest said lock plate in either of said operative positions.

Espagnolette lock for the right and left sided latching of doors, windows and the like, comprising a lock box; rotatably closure bar means extending through said lock box; a lock plate having interdigitating means adapted to operatively engage said closure bar means; a cover for said lock box; nut means rotatably journaled in the wall of said lock box and in said cover, said nut means having actuating cam means of approximately circular eccentric cam configuration, said cam means engaging said lock plate in the region of the axis of symmetry thereof, so as to, upon rotation of said nut means about an angle of 180°, forcibly move said lock plate from an opened position to a locked position and conversely, and to arrest said lock plate in either of said operative positions; and key guide means adapted to be mounted on said cover in two alternate positions 180° offset relative to each other, said key guide means including two projections of different lengths; apertures in said cover for receiving said projections, said projection having the longer length being adatped to contact two surfaces on said nut means for limiting the extent of rotary movement thereof.

3. A lock as claimed in claim 2, said key guide means including a flanged base portion having recesses conforming with the key bits of variously shaped keys, said guide means having a shank portion forming a centering sleeve for said lock and being adapted to grippingly support a keyhole shield.

Description:
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to an espagnolette lock adapted for the right and left-hand latching of doors, windows and the like.

The lock includes a lock box, a rotatable closure bar, a locking plate which is in gripping engagement with the closure bar through the intermediary of a cog arrangement, and a nut which is rotatably supported in the wall of the lock box and in a cover, and which projects by means of an actuating pin through an aperture in the locking plate.

DISCUSSION OF THE PRIOR ART

Espagnolette locks of this type are known, for example, from Swiss Pat. No. 364,193. In these known prior art locks, the nut is actuated by means of a turn handle or rotary grip, or so-called olive, which extends, by means of a rectangularly-shaped bar, into a complementary recess formed in the nut. However, these locks cannot be constructed so as to be simultaneously actuatable by a key. For that purpose, the lock components must be modified whereby the lock box cover is provided with an aperture in conformance with a key bit, and the locking plate includes an aperture facilitating lock actuation by the key bit.

Inasmuch as these locks in order to be adapted for actuation through a rotary grip or through key must be completely differently constructed, the manufacture thereof becomes more expensive, while commercial storage is also complicated.

Furthermore, the known espagnolette locks have the added disadvantage in that their actuation requires a relatively large force, and with the locks often tending to wedge. The reason for the foregoing lies in that, upon actuation of the lock plate by means of a nut, as well as its actuation through a key, there is always only available a turning angle through 90° in order to move the lock plate from its opened condition into its locking condition, and vice versa. For the remaining 270° of the full revolution, the key is idly movable, in essence, without any actuation of the locking plate. Additionally, the force exerted through the pin of the nut, or respectively from the key bit, against the locking plate often is transmitted to the latter at one side thereof, which may result in a canting of the locking plate and, consequently, an increase in the friction in its support bearings.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is, accordingly, an object of the present invention to provide an improved espagnolette lock of the above-described type which, on the one hand, requires only low actuating forces and, on the other hand, permits the identical lock to be acutated by means of a cipher-bit key, a security cylinder olive or rotary grip, whereby various components must be interchanged, but in which the basic structure of the lock remains always unchanged.

The foregoing object is attained in an inventive manner when the actuating pin of the nut is formed so as to at least approximate a circular eccentric pin which, at least in proximity to the axis of symmetry of the locking plate, connects with the latter so as to, upon rotation of the nut through an angle of 180°, forcibly moves the plate out of its opened condition into its locking condition, and vice versa, and arrests the latter in the open-and locked positions.

Through this construction there becomes available double the angle of rotation for the nut for effecting the displacement of the locking plate, and to thereby prevent canting of the locking plate.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the nut is provided with a recess for directly receiving a security cylinder, and further a through-extending bore, preferably a rectangular bore, and a slot in one side of the nut body for receiving the key bit for left and right-hand operation.

The rectangularly shaped pin of a security cylinder, a cylinder olive or a rotary grip can be thereby introduced into the rectangular bore of the nut, whereas all forms of cipher keys may be received through the slot.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The lock constructed according to FIGS. 1 through 5 is shown equipped for actuation by means of a cipher bit key. The lock includes a lock box 1 in whose upper and lower narrow side walls a closure bar 2 is rotatably supported. The closure bar 2 includes at its ends (not shown), in a known manner, suitable gripping hooks which extend in the closing condition thereof into suitable blocks. Within the lock box 1 there is positioned a displaceable lock plate 3 having a lock portion 3a. The lock plate is supported at one side thereof in a slot 4 formed in the front wall 1a of the lock box, and at the other side thereof on the inner surfaces of the narrow side walls 1b, 1c. Fastened onto the closure bar 2 is a rotary follower 5 having two follower teeth 6 which, in an also known manner, are adapted to extend into two apertures 7 formed in the lock plate 3. The lock plate 3 is symmetrically formed with respect to a horizontal axis. The lock plate also includes an aperture 8 in which there extends a closely circular eccentric cam 9 which is formed on a nut 10.

The nut 10 is supported, by means of a cylindrical shoulder 11, within a bore of the lock box 1, and at its opposite side, through a larger diameter cylindrical shoulder 12, with a bore in a cover 13. At the side having the cylindrical shoulder 12, the nut 10 is provided with a recess 18a which is adapted to receive the end surface of a security cylinder 24 (see also FIG. 8). The nut 10 incorporates a portion 14 extending concentrically about its rotary axis, which on one side thereof projects beyond the eccentric cam 9, and which through a surface 14a forms a guide for the lock plate 3, so that the latter is constantly supported along the inner wall of the lock box 1 (FIG. 5). The cover 13 has two flanges 15 extending into the front surface wall 1a of the lock box, and is secured to the opposite edge by means of projections 16.

The nut 10 is further provided with a rectangular through-hole 17, and a diagonal slot 18 which is located on the front side of the nut and which has a depth of approximately one-half the thickness of the nut. The slot 18 is formed in a manner so as to be adapted to receive various forms of key bits, which are provided for the lock, in two positions displaced 180° relative to each other, while the rectangular hole 17 is designed to receive the rectangular projections of security cylinders, cylinder olives and rotary grips. The heretofore described components of the lock are similarly constructed for all types of lock actuating means.

In the event that the lock is to be constucted for actuation through the use of a cipher bit key 19, then a key guide 20 is mounted on the cover 13. The key guide 20 includes a flange 20a having two differently long projections 20b, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, and which extend into respective apertures formed in the cover 13. The flange 20a is formed of such a thickness so that its exterior surface 20c (FIG. 5) is flush with the edges of the narrower sides of the lock box 1. The key guide is, upon mounting of the lock onto a door wing or a window, only fastened to the cover 13. The guide is then, upon fastening of the lock by means of screws 22 (FIG. 4), automatically fastened between the lock and the door or, respectively, the window. The middle base portion of the flange 20a is provided with a recess which may be conformed to the various shapes of the key bits. The closure or lock distinctions lie herein in the mountable key guide 20, and not in the cover 13. The adaptation of the lock for either left-or right side latching is effected simply through the insertion of the key guide 20 into two positions which are displaceable by 180° (see FIGS. 2 and 3). The longer one of the two projections 20b acts in conjunction with two contact surfaces 10a of the nut 10 so as to limit the extent of rotational movement to 180°.

The key guide 20 is provided with a shank 20d, which is adapted to receive the shank 21a of a keyhole cover 21. The shank 21a extends in grip-fitting engagement into the shank 20d in which a rib 21b, which projects into a complementary groove 20e formed in the sleeve 20d, ensures that the keyhole shield 21 is correctly oriented relative to the key guide 20. Upon mounting of the lock, the keyhole shield can be simply introduced from externally of the door or window into the shank of the key guide by means of a light tapping force. Consequently, a threaded or screw arrangement is not required.

The embodiment shown in FIGS. 6 through 8 illustrates a lock which is equipped for actuation by a security-lock cylinder. In lieu of the key guide 20, a support plate 23 is mounted on the cover 13. The support plate 23 is secured by means of two projections 23a which extend into corresponding apertures formed in the lock box 1. The plate 23 is, as in the case of key guide 20, clamped fast between the door and the lock box upon mounting of the lock onto a door or the like. The support plate 23 is provided with an aperture having two parallel edges 23b which extend into respective recesses 24a formed in the locking cylinder 24. The locking cylinder 24 extends with its rectangular projection 25 into the rectangular hole 17 of the nut, and is thereby secured against sideways displacement. The support plate 23 is secured to the cover 13 by means of four beads 23c which are formed by deformations.

In a similar manner, a rotary grip having a rectangular pin may be connected with the lock. The rectangular pin may, however, be also screwed to the nut 10 from the rear of the lock. The nut 10 is suitably formed of sintered steel.

Inasmuch as the lock in order to be actuated by means of a key, a locking cylinder or a rotary grip merely need be adapted thereto by the mounting thereon of a key guide 20 or a support plate 23, there is provided a simple and inexpensive constructional arrangement, and a greatly simplified commercial storage.

The eccentric cam 9 of the nut extends in close fit approximately in the center of the lock plate 3 into the aperture 8. For effecting movement of the lock plate 3 from its opened condition into its closed condition, the nut must be rotated, for example, by a key 19 through an angle of 180°, so as to employ the full angular displacement for the movement of the lock plate. The required force therefore, in comparison with known espagnolette locks, is reduced by approximately one-half. Concurrently there is provided the advantage that the key can be withdrawn from the lock only in the closed position of the lock plate.

While there has been shown what is considered to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be obvious that modifications may be made which come within the scope of the disclosure of the specification.
