REVERSIBLE DOLL

A reversible doll including a head having two back-to-back faces with different features formed thereon. The head has a protruding annular flange dividing it generally along a vertical plane when the head is upright, thereby separating the two faces. A garment including a hood portion and a torso portion are provided to cover the doll. The hood is secured about the flange so that one of the faces is in the interior of the doll while the other face is exposed through an opening in the hood. The doll can be transformed by turning the clothes inside out with respect to the flange so that the previously exposed face will then be covered by the hood portion and vice versa.

1. A reversible doll comprising:

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of Invention
The present invention relates to dolls and more particularly to reversible dolls.
2. Brief Description of the Prior Art
Reversible dolls have enjoyed a great deal of popularity due in great part to the fact that a child is able to transform a doll from one form or style to another. The two most common types of reversible dolls employ either a double headed upside-down construction or a back-to-back face construction. The former construction generally includes an exterior head exposed to view and an inverted head enclosed by a dress or cloak extending down to the bottom of the doll. When the doll is turned upside-down the other head then becomes visible. The back-to-back face construction employs just one head having two back-to-back faces formed thereon.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel back-to-back faced reversible doll which is easy to manufacture and simple to use.
This and other objects of the invention are accomplished by one embodiment of the invention currently contemplated by providing a generally annular flange on the doll's head separating the head into two faces generally along a vertical plane when the head is upright and dividing the head into the two face portions. Clothes means in the form of a simulated garment is fabricated of material having two sides with different designs on each side. The clothes means includes a top hood portion secured to the annular flange so that one of the faces is in the interior of the hood while the other face is exposed through the hood opening. A bottom torso portion of the garment extends downwardly from the hood portion and has a bottom opening large enough to receive a child's hand into the interior of the torso portion. The doll can be transformed by turning the clothes means inside out with respect to the annular flange on the doll's head so that the previously exposed face will be covered by the hood portion and vice versa.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Turning now to FIGS. 1 and 2, the reversible doll of the present invention, generally designated 10, is shown in two different modes. FIG. 1 shows a doll with a happy face 12a in brightly decorated clothes whereas FIG. 2 shows a doll with a sad face 12b and somewhat tattered clothes.
The doll 10 generally includes a molded plastic head, generally designated 16, having the two faces 12a and 12b with different features formed thereon in back-to-back relationship.
Looking at FIGS. 4 and 6, it can be seen that a generally annular flange 18 is formed on the head 16 dividing the head generally along a vertical plane when the doll's head is erect, separating the two faces 12a and 12b. The flange 18 preferably is formed so that it is integral with the head 16.
The flange 18 has a cut away portion 20 formed near the top of the head 16 (see FIGS. 4 and 6). The cut away portion 20 receives a plurality of strands of hair 22 therethrough having opposed hair tufts 22a and 22b. Thus, the hair tufts 22a and 22b on opposite sides of the flange 18 covering a portion of each face 12a and 12b. The hair tuft 22a covering the happy face 12a (see FIG. 4) is in a generally neat hair style to correspond with a happy face. The hair tuft 22b covering and extending around portions of the sad face 12b (see FIG. 6) is more of a drab hair style to match the sad face 12b.
Clothes means, generally designated 24, in the form of a simulated garment is secured to the head 16 and extends downwardly therefrom. The clothes means 24 is formed from material having two sides 26a and 26b. Side 26a has a bright, cheery design printed thereon while side 26b has a rather drab design printed thereon. (See FIGS. 1, 2, 4 and 6).
The material comprising the clothes means 24 is formed so that there is a top hood portion 28 having an opening 30 formed therein (FIGS. 4 and 6). The hood portion is secured around the flange 18. As can be best seen in FIGS. 5 and 7, the hood portion 28 either covers the sad face 12b (FIG. 5) or the happy face 12a (FIG. 7) thereby exhibiting the opposite face through the hood opening 30.
The clothes means 24 also includes a torso portion 32 integral with the hood portion 28 and extending downwardly therefrom. The torso portion 32 is generally in the form of a dress or other garment and has a bottom opening 34 formed therein (FIGS. 4-7) large enough to receive a child's hand therethrough into the interior of the torso portion.
Two pair of arms 36a and 36b are provided on either side of the torso portion 32 just below the hood portion 28. The arms are secured opposite each other to the opposite sides 26a and 26b of the material. The arms include stuffing material 38 (FIG. 4) within suitable outer covering provided by the garment material. Arms 36a have a design printed thereon which is coordinated with the design on side 26a of the garment material, while arms 36b have a design printed thereon which is coordinated with the design on side 26b of the garment material. At any one time, one pair of arms are outside of the clothes means 24 while the other pair of arms are in the interior of the clothes means (see FIGS. 4 and 6).
A pair of legs 42 are secured to the back lower extremities of the torso portion 32 of the clothes means 24 and extend downwardly therefrom. The legs 42 generally include stuffing material 44 (FIG. 5) encased within two leg covering portions 46a and 46b. Leg covering portion 46a has a design printed thereon which is coordinated with or otherwise matches the material on garment side 26a, while leg covering portion 46b has a design printed thereon which is coordinated with or otherwise matches the material on garment side 26b. When material side 26a is observable on the doll as shown in FIG. 4, leg covering 46a is the front cover of the legs 42. When material side 26b is observable on the doll, leg covering 46b is the front cover of the legs as shown in FIG. 6.
Turning now to FIGS. 3a-3e in greater detail, it can be seen that the doll can be transformed from the form shown in FIG. 1 to the form shown in FIG. 2. The first step is to insert one's hand through the bottom opening 34 of the torso portion 32 (see FIG. 3a). The second step, as shown in FIG. 3b, is to grasp the face 12b that is covered by the hood portion 28. The next step, as best shown in FIGS. 3c and 3d, is to turn the head 16 upside down. It is to be noted that as the head 16 is turned upside down the clothes means 24 is turned inside out relative to the flange 18. After the clothes means have been turned completely inside out, the doll of FIG. 2 appears as shown in FIG. 3e.
During the above transformation, the doll's face is changed from face 12a to face 12b, the doll's clothes means 24 have been changed from side 26a to side 26b, the doll's hair has been changed from hair style 22a to hair style 22b, the doll's arms have been changed from arms 36a to arms 36b, and the front leg coverings have been changed from 46a to 46b. In order to change the doll from the doll shown in FIG. 2 to the doll shown in FIG. 1, the same process as above described is effected.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom as some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
1. Field of Invention
The present invention relates to dolls and more particularly to reversible dolls.
2. Brief Description of the Prior Art
Reversible dolls have enjoyed a great deal of popularity due in great part to the fact that a child is able to transform a doll from one form or style to another. The two most common types of reversible dolls employ either a double headed upside-down construction or a back-to-back face construction. The former construction generally includes an exterior head exposed to view and an inverted head enclosed by a dress or cloak extending down to the bottom of the doll. When the doll is turned upside-down the other head then becomes visible. The back-to-back face construction employs just one head having two back-to-back faces formed thereon.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel back-to-back faced reversible doll which is easy to manufacture and simple to use.
This and other objects of the invention are accomplished by one embodiment of the invention currently contemplated by providing a generally annular flange on the doll's head separating the head into two faces generally along a vertical plane when the head is upright and dividing the head into the two face portions. Clothes means in the form of a simulated garment is fabricated of material having two sides with different designs on each side. The clothes means includes a top hood portion secured to the annular flange so that one of the faces is in the interior of the hood while the other face is exposed through the hood opening. A bottom torso portion of the garment extends downwardly from the hood portion and has a bottom opening large enough to receive a child's hand into the interior of the torso portion. The doll can be transformed by turning the clothes means inside out with respect to the annular flange on the doll's head so that the previously exposed face will be covered by the hood portion and vice versa.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Turning now to FIGS. 1 and 2, the reversible doll of the present invention, generally designated 10, is shown in two different modes. FIG. 1 shows a doll with a happy face 12a in brightly decorated clothes whereas FIG. 2 shows a doll with a sad face 12b and somewhat tattered clothes.
The doll 10 generally includes a molded plastic head, generally designated 16, having the two faces 12a and 12b with different features formed thereon in back-to-back relationship.
Looking at FIGS. 4 and 6, it can be seen that a generally annular flange 18 is formed on the head 16 dividing the head generally along a vertical plane when the doll's head is erect, separating the two faces 12a and 12b. The flange 18 preferably is formed so that it is integral with the head 16.
The flange 18 has a cut away portion 20 formed near the top of the head 16 (see FIGS. 4 and 6). The cut away portion 20 receives a plurality of strands of hair 22 therethrough having opposed hair tufts 22a and 22b. Thus, the hair tufts 22a and 22b on opposite sides of the flange 18 covering a portion of each face 12a and 12b. The hair tuft 22a covering the happy face 12a (see FIG. 4) is in a generally neat hair style to correspond with a happy face. The hair tuft 22b covering and extending around portions of the sad face 12b (see FIG. 6) is more of a drab hair style to match the sad face 12b.
Clothes means, generally designated 24, in the form of a simulated garment is secured to the head 16 and extends downwardly therefrom. The clothes means 24 is formed from material having two sides 26a and 26b. Side 26a has a bright, cheery design printed thereon while side 26b has a rather drab design printed thereon. (See FIGS. 1, 2, 4 and 6).
The material comprising the clothes means 24 is formed so that there is a top hood portion 28 having an opening 30 formed therein (FIGS. 4 and 6). The hood portion is secured around the flange 18. As can be best seen in FIGS. 5 and 7, the hood portion 28 either covers the sad face 12b (FIG. 5) or the happy face 12a (FIG. 7) thereby exhibiting the opposite face through the hood opening 30.
The clothes means 24 also includes a torso portion 32 integral with the hood portion 28 and extending downwardly therefrom. The torso portion 32 is generally in the form of a dress or other garment and has a bottom opening 34 formed therein (FIGS. 4-7) large enough to receive a child's hand therethrough into the interior of the torso portion.
Two pair of arms 36a and 36b are provided on either side of the torso portion 32 just below the hood portion 28. The arms are secured opposite each other to the opposite sides 26a and 26b of the material. The arms include stuffing material 38 (FIG. 4) within suitable outer covering provided by the garment material. Arms 36a have a design printed thereon which is coordinated with the design on side 26a of the garment material, while arms 36b have a design printed thereon which is coordinated with the design on side 26b of the garment material. At any one time, one pair of arms are outside of the clothes means 24 while the other pair of arms are in the interior of the clothes means (see FIGS. 4 and 6).
A pair of legs 42 are secured to the back lower extremities of the torso portion 32 of the clothes means 24 and extend downwardly therefrom. The legs 42 generally include stuffing material 44 (FIG. 5) encased within two leg covering portions 46a and 46b. Leg covering portion 46a has a design printed thereon which is coordinated with or otherwise matches the material on garment side 26a, while leg covering portion 46b has a design printed thereon which is coordinated with or otherwise matches the material on garment side 26b. When material side 26a is observable on the doll as shown in FIG. 4, leg covering 46a is the front cover of the legs 42. When material side 26b is observable on the doll, leg covering 46b is the front cover of the legs as shown in FIG. 6.
Turning now to FIGS. 3a-3e in greater detail, it can be seen that the doll can be transformed from the form shown in FIG. 1 to the form shown in FIG. 2. The first step is to insert one's hand through the bottom opening 34 of the torso portion 32 (see FIG. 3a). The second step, as shown in FIG. 3b, is to grasp the face 12b that is covered by the hood portion 28. The next step, as best shown in FIGS. 3c and 3d, is to turn the head 16 upside down. It is to be noted that as the head 16 is turned upside down the clothes means 24 is turned inside out relative to the flange 18. After the clothes means have been turned completely inside out, the doll of FIG. 2 appears as shown in FIG. 3e.
During the above transformation, the doll's face is changed from face 12a to face 12b, the doll's clothes means 24 have been changed from side 26a to side 26b, the doll's hair has been changed from hair style 22a to hair style 22b, the doll's arms have been changed from arms 36a to arms 36b, and the front leg coverings have been changed from 46a to 46b. In order to change the doll from the doll shown in FIG. 2 to the doll shown in FIG. 1, the same process as above described is effected.
