Description:
The present invention relates to a tool formed by a body enclosing a ballpoint pen to which, is affixed, a rod which acts as a point of a compass, and which makes it possible, by using the writing point of the pen, to draw circumferences of predetermined diameters.
Such a tool as expected cannot be a tool of exacting precision, but rather it is a practical tool, which allows the use of the ballpoint pen in all usual ways and, furthermore -- when one needs to make drawings, diagrams, etc. -- permits the use of compass in order to make use of its special features.
It is one object of the present invention, to provide a compass ballpoint pen combination, wherein the cost of manufacturing of the combination is very low, with the simple use of plastic material of practically no cost, comprising an inner compartment, offset somewhat with respect to the axis of the case, and receiving therein a flexible ballpoint pen cartridge.
Following the curved surfaces of the case, on the outside, a vertical depression is formed with a sufficient cross-section to allow same to receive therein a pivotal compass point arm which, when folded down, fits completely into the outer surface of the case in the depression.
It is another object of the present invention, to provide a compass ballpoint pen combination, wherein the upper end of the compass point arm widens and is pivotally mounted on, and attached to a bolt or transversal pin provided on the head of the case, and which, furthermore, has two parallel grooves, which make it possible to articulate the point in order to set the openings and determine the radius of the circumference to be drawn.
It is still another object of the present invention, to provide a part on the upper end of the case, which part protrudes over the bolt and is cylindrical and striated in order to facilitate the handling of the tool, when it is used as a compass.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is an axial section of the entire unit; the compass point being shown in dotted lines in an extended position;
FIG. 2 is a front elevational view of the ballpoint pen with the compass point arm folded back; and
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the ballpoint pen, shown in FIG. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, the compass ballpoint pen combination comprises a case, made of preferably plastic material, on the inside of which there is a formed a compartment 2, which houses a flexible and replaceable cartridge 4 of the ballpoint pen, the latter ending in a writing point 5.
Vertically extending and following the curved surfaces of the case 1, there is formed a vertical depression 3 which houses a compass point arm 6 which, when its needle 8 is retracted, fits complementarily into the depression 3. In order to adjust the needle 8, a small grooved wheel 7 is provided. The depression is formed with a circular widening just at the height of a wheel 7 and complementary to its periphery 3a, so that it will fit in.
On the upper end of the arm 6, a flap 9 is pivotally mounted on a transverse pin 10 in a direction opposite to a couple of vertical grooves 11, which are diametrically opposed and which make possible the free articulation of the flap 9 on the pin 10.
A jointed clamp 13 is provided over the pin 10 and astride the flap 9, on which clamp 13, a pommel 12 is screwed, in order to improve the effectiveness of the compass.
When the arm of the compass is folded downwardly, one may make normal use of the ballpoint pen, since the diameter of the case 1, is slightly enlarged, but still falls within usual norms, and which permits the perfect use of the writing tool which, when the arm 6 is extended and set on a point with an appropriate radius for the opening, the pen will serve as the tracing end of a compass.
While I have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood, that this embodiment is given by example only, and not in a limiting sense.
