STOVE PROTECTOR
United States Patent 3789823
A device for protecting a stove from accidental release of heat or gas due to faulty manipulation of controls by children, pets and the like. The controls extend out of a vertical surface of the stove. A horizontally elongated shield is adapted to detachably cover the controls. The shield has at least one port permitting access to a control. A disc is pivotally secured to the shield to normally cover said port. The disc is manually pivotable out of sealing engagement with the cover.

Claims:
1. A device for protecting a stove from accidental application of heat or release of gas, said stove having a plurality of controls extending out of a vertical surface, said device comprising:

2. The device of claim 1 wherein said surface has two vertically spaced horizontally elongated grooves, the controls being disposed in the region between said grooves, said shield having two vertically spaced horizontally elongated edges, each edge being adapted for detachably

3. The device of claim 2 wherein opposite ends of the shield are exposed

4. The device of claim 3 wherein said shield is manually adjustable in the

5. The device in claim 4 wherein the shield in vertical cross section has the shape of a side disposed U with upper and lower horizontal legs being interconnected by a vertical cross piece.

Description:
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Young children often will play with exposed controls of a stove. They can accidentally turn gas fired or electrically heated elements on with obvious resultant danger to themselves and others. In a gas stove, should the pilot light be extinguished, gas can be released. Pets also can accidentally turn on controls.

In my invention this hazard is eliminated by securing a detachable horizontally elongated shield to the vertical surface of the stove to cover the controls exposed thereat. The shield has at least one port permitting access to a control. A disc is normally in position to cover the control but is manually pivotable out of sealing engagement with the port.

A user not wishing to remove the shield may still use one heating element by moving the disc and obtaining access to a control. The action of the disc is made sufficiently stiff whereby it cannot be operated by young children.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

In the drawings:

FIG. 1 is a partially exploded view of my invention in use;

FIG. 2 is a detail view of my shield; and

FIG. 3 is a side detail view of my invention in use.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

Referring now to FIGS. 1-3, a stove 10 has a vertical surface having elongated upper and lower vertically spaced horizontal grooves 12 with controls 14 disposed between the grooves.

A shield which is horizontally elongated defines in vertical cross section a side disposed U with upper and lower horizontal legs 16 and a vertical cross piece 18. Legs 16 and piece 18 are horizontally elongated.

Each leg snap fits detachably into a corresponding groove 12 whereby the controls are covered by piece 18. Member 20 is a storage holder secured to the wall to hold the shield when not in use.

Piece 18 can have a port 22 exposing a control. A disc 24 with a control tab 26 can be pivotally secured at 28 to the piece to either seal the port or to be swung away from the port to expose a control for use.

The shield can have two like sections, the additional section being shown with cross piece 18' and legs 16' which fit slidably together to permit the length of the horizontal overall extension of the shield to be adjusted as required by the dimensions of the stove used.

This adjustment is easily set by aligning holes 30 in both cross pieces and screwing same together by screws 32. Holes 30 can be threaded if desired.

While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, such is not to be considered as limiting its actual scope.
