Abstract:
A handle or holder for playing and spinning a cymbal includes a non-rotatable handgrip portion and a rotatable portion adapted to be revolved by the thumb and forefinger. The cymbal is secured to a rod which extends through and is fixed to the handle rotatable portion and which extends through the non-rotatable handgrip portion for displacement relative thereto.

Claims:
I claim

1. A cymbal holder for playing and spinning a cymbal comprising, a support means, means for mounting a cymbal upon said support means, and handle means coupled to said support means, said handle means including a first portion serving as a handgrip and a second portion secured to said support means and mounted for rotation relative to said first portion.

2. A cymbal holder as recited in claim 1, wherein said support means comprises an elongated rod extending through said handle means first and second portions and having a cymbal mounted adjacent one end thereof.

3. A cymbal holder as recited in claim 2, wherein said elongated rod includes a first portion which extends through said handle means and a second portion for supporting the cymbal, said rod first portion and said rod second portion being angularly disposed relative to each other.

4. A cymbal holder as recited in claim 3, wherein said handle means includes bearing means intermediate said first handgrip portion and said rod first portion.

5. A cymbal holder as recited in claim 4, and further including releasable fastening means for retaining said handle means upon said elongated rod.

6. A cymbal holder as recited in claim 5, wherein said handle means second portion secured to said elongated rod is positioned in close proximity to said handle means first handgrip portion and is adapted to be rotated relative to said handle means handgrip portion for spinning said elongated rod and a cymbal secured thereto.

A cymbal holder as recited in claim 1, wherein said support means includes a rod having a first portion mounted for rotation relative to said handle means first portion and fixed for rotation of said handle means second portion, said rod first portion passing centrally through said handle means.

8. A cymbal holder as recited in claim 7, said rod further including a second portion angularly disposed relative to said rod first portion and having means for supporting a cymbal thereon.

9. A cymbal holder as recited in claim 8, wherein said rod second portion is disposed at an angle of approximately 45° with respect to said rod first portion.

Description:
BRIEF SUMMARY AND OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates generally to holders or handles for cymbals and more particularly to a holder which permits spinning of the cymbal, particularly when utilized in marching bands and drum corps.

A conventional type of cymbal holder utilizes leather straps, however, such leather straps bruise the hands when used in spinning.

Briefly, the cymbal holder of the present invention includes a rod having a first portion fixedly secured to the cymbal and a second portion which extends through a handgrip. Bearings are provided between the rod and the handgrip to permit rotation of the rod second portion within the handgrip. A rotatable hand portion is positioned above the handgrip and secured to the rod second portion for rotation of the cymbal and rod.

One of the primary objects of the invention is the provision of a new and improved cymbal holder which permits rotation of the cymbal relative to the holder.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a cymbal holder cymbal a first handgrip portion for supporting the cymbal and a second portion which is adapted to be revolved or held between the thumb and forefinger.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a cymbal holder which is simple and reliable in operation and which lends itself to economic production.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent when considered in view of the following detailed description.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of the cymbal holder of the present invention having a cymbal supported thereon;

FIG. 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary view of the cymbal and holder of FIG. 1, the cymbal and holder being partly shown in cross-section; and

FIG. 3 is a reduced side elevational view of the cymbal and holder and illustrating one method of gripping a portion of the handle while rotating another portion of the handle and cymbal with the thumb.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Referring to the drawing, the cymbal holder 10 includes a handle having a first handgrip portion 12 adapted to be held in the hand, a second portion 14 adapted to be revolved relative to the handgrip portion 12, and an elongated rod or bar 16 for supporting the cymbal 18.

The rod 16 includes a first portion 20, which extends through the handgrip portion 12 and the rotatable portion 14 of the handle, and a second portion 22 which supports the cymbal 18, the rod second portion 22 being disposed at approximately a 45° angle with respect to the first portion 20.

The rod portion 22 includes a shoulder 24 and a threaded outer end 26 of reduced diameter. A metal washer 28 abuts the shoulder 24 and provides a stop or support for the felt or plastic washer 30 and the cymbal 18. The cymbal 18 is provided with a central opening through which the threaded end 26 of the shaft portion 22 extends. A felt or plastic washer 32 and a plastic or metal washer 34 are provided on the side of the cymbal opposite washers 28 and 30. A nut 36 secures the cymbal 18 to the rod 16.

The portion 20 of the rod extends through an axial opening within the rotatable handle portion 14 and is secured thereto for rotation therewith. In the embodiment illustrated, nuts 38 are threaded upon a section of rod portion 20 and abut the ends of the rotatable handle portion 14 for securing together the rod 16 and rotatable handle portion 14. However, it is to be understood that the rotatable handle portion 14 and the rod 16 may be secured together by any suitable means, such as welding, etc.

The handle portion 12 serves as a handgrip, as shown by FIG. 3, and supports the rod 16 and handle portion for rotation relative thereto. Handle portion 12 has bearing units 40 at each end thereof permitting rotation of the rod portion 20 which extends therethrough. The inner race 41 of each bearing unit 40 rotates with the rod 16 while the outer race 43 of each unit is attached to handle portion 12. The sleeve 42 surrounding the rod 20 maintains the bearing units in spaced relation. A nut 44 is threadably received upon the threaded end 46 of rod portion 20 for maintaining the bearing units 40, handle portion 12, sleeve 42, and rod 20 in assembled relation. It is to be understood that the handle portion 12 and the rod portion 20 may be mounted for relative rotation by means other than that illustrated by the drawing.

The handle portions 12 and 14 may be formed of any suitable material.

During playing of the cymbal, the handle portion 12 is gripped by the hand and the handle portion 14 is held between the thumb and/or forefinger to prevent rotation of the cymbal and shaft 16 relative to the handle portion 12. The cymbal 18 and shaft 16 may be revolved by gripping and rotating the handle portion 14, relative to handle portion 12, with the thumb and/or forefinger, as shown by FIG. 3.
