PLIER-LIKE CHAMPAGNE CORK REMOVER

A plier-like champagne cork remover comprises means for gripping the free end of the cork of a champagne bottle, means for guiding the neck of the bottle when the cork secured in the bottle by a wire is being removed, and means for cutting through the cork securing wire when the means for gripping the free end of the cork are being moved towards each other, the arrangement being such that the means for guiding the bottle neck and the means for cutting through the wire move in synchronism with the movement of the means for gripping the free end of the cork.

Description:
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to cork removers, and more specifically to a plier-like champagne cork remover.
Cork removers of this type have already become known in the art. They are constructed to grip that part of the cork which protrudes from the bottle mouth and have two rectangular guide members which support the bottle neck during the opening of the bottle from below.
With these known cork removers there remains, however, the difficulty of detaching from the bottle neck the cork securing wire which is always used where champagne bottles are concerned. Also with the known improved cork remover the removal of the securing wire has to be effected by hand prior to using the remover. In this connection it very often occurs that the wire breaks during unwinding. Due to the internal pressure prevailing in the bottle it also occurs very often that after the removal of the securing wire the cork is forced out and part of the bottle contents get lost.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is the object of the present invention to overcome this disadvantage and to provide a plier-like champagne cork remover with which it is possible to combine removing the cork, supporting the bottle neck and cutting through the wire into one and the same working operation.
To attain this object, the present invention provides a plier-like champagne cork remover which comprises a pair of elongated levers forming substantially semi-circular cork gripping heads at one end and handles at the other; a pivot pin for connecting said levers together at the free ends of their cork gripping heads; a stud secured to and projecting at right angles from each of said handles; a pair of levers pivoted to each other intermediate their ends by a pivot pin and to both studs to support and guide the neck of a champagne bottle when the cork secured in position by a wire is being removed, and a pair of nippers interconnected intermediate their ends by a pivot pin and likewise pivoted to both studs to cut through the cork securing wire when the semi-circular cork gripping heads of the elongated levers are applied to the cork and the two handles are moved towards each other, the arrangement being such that the pair of levers and the pair of nippers move in synchronism with the movement of the handles.
After the cork remover has been applied to the protruding part of the cork, first and foremost the wire is cut through with the aid of the pair of nippers, whereupon the cork is loosened by slightly turning it to and fro, so that the internal pressure of the bottle can escape and the cork be removed by means of the remover.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The drawing shows a plier-like champagne cork remover according to the invention which consists of a pair of elongated levers 1 and 1' forming substantially semi-circular cork gripping heads at one end and handles at the other. A pivot pin 1b connects the levers 1 and 1' at the free ends of the cork gripping heads. Studs 2 and 2a are secured to and project at right angles from the handles of the levers 1 and 1'. A pair of levers 5 and 5a are pivoted to one another intermediate their ends by a pivot pin 5b and to both studs 2 and 2a to support and guide the neck 7 of a champagne bottle when the cork 6 secured in position by a wire 6b and a sheet metal strip 6a is being removed.
A pair of nippers 3 and 3a are interconnected intermediate their ends by a pivot pin 3b and likewise pivoted to both studs 2 and 2a to cut through the cork securing wire 6b by means of their cutting edges 4 when the semicircular cork gripping heads of the elongated levers 1 and 1' are applied to the outer end of the cork and the two handles are moved towards each other.
By the plier-like champagne cork remover proposed by the invention it is achieved that the pair of supporting and guiding levers 5 and 5a and the cutting edges 4 of the pair of nippers 3 and 3a move in synchronism with the movement of the handles.
Preferably, the supporting and guiding levers 5 and 5a are pivoted to the studs 2 and 2a by means of lugs 2' and 2a' formed at the lower ends of said levers.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The embodiment is therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
This invention relates to cork removers, and more specifically to a plier-like champagne cork remover.
Cork removers of this type have already become known in the art. They are constructed to grip that part of the cork which protrudes from the bottle mouth and have two rectangular guide members which support the bottle neck during the opening of the bottle from below.
With these known cork removers there remains, however, the difficulty of detaching from the bottle neck the cork securing wire which is always used where champagne bottles are concerned. Also with the known improved cork remover the removal of the securing wire has to be effected by hand prior to using the remover. In this connection it very often occurs that the wire breaks during unwinding. Due to the internal pressure prevailing in the bottle it also occurs very often that after the removal of the securing wire the cork is forced out and part of the bottle contents get lost.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is the object of the present invention to overcome this disadvantage and to provide a plier-like champagne cork remover with which it is possible to combine removing the cork, supporting the bottle neck and cutting through the wire into one and the same working operation.
To attain this object, the present invention provides a plier-like champagne cork remover which comprises a pair of elongated levers forming substantially semi-circular cork gripping heads at one end and handles at the other; a pivot pin for connecting said levers together at the free ends of their cork gripping heads; a stud secured to and projecting at right angles from each of said handles; a pair of levers pivoted to each other intermediate their ends by a pivot pin and to both studs to support and guide the neck of a champagne bottle when the cork secured in position by a wire is being removed, and a pair of nippers interconnected intermediate their ends by a pivot pin and likewise pivoted to both studs to cut through the cork securing wire when the semi-circular cork gripping heads of the elongated levers are applied to the cork and the two handles are moved towards each other, the arrangement being such that the pair of levers and the pair of nippers move in synchronism with the movement of the handles.
After the cork remover has been applied to the protruding part of the cork, first and foremost the wire is cut through with the aid of the pair of nippers, whereupon the cork is loosened by slightly turning it to and fro, so that the internal pressure of the bottle can escape and the cork be removed by means of the remover.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The drawing shows a plier-like champagne cork remover according to the invention which consists of a pair of elongated levers 1 and 1' forming substantially semi-circular cork gripping heads at one end and handles at the other. A pivot pin 1b connects the levers 1 and 1' at the free ends of the cork gripping heads. Studs 2 and 2a are secured to and project at right angles from the handles of the levers 1 and 1'. A pair of levers 5 and 5a are pivoted to one another intermediate their ends by a pivot pin 5b and to both studs 2 and 2a to support and guide the neck 7 of a champagne bottle when the cork 6 secured in position by a wire 6b and a sheet metal strip 6a is being removed.
A pair of nippers 3 and 3a are interconnected intermediate their ends by a pivot pin 3b and likewise pivoted to both studs 2 and 2a to cut through the cork securing wire 6b by means of their cutting edges 4 when the semicircular cork gripping heads of the elongated levers 1 and 1' are applied to the outer end of the cork and the two handles are moved towards each other.
By the plier-like champagne cork remover proposed by the invention it is achieved that the pair of supporting and guiding levers 5 and 5a and the cutting edges 4 of the pair of nippers 3 and 3a move in synchronism with the movement of the handles.
Preferably, the supporting and guiding levers 5 and 5a are pivoted to the studs 2 and 2a by means of lugs 2' and 2a' formed at the lower ends of said levers.
