MULTIPLE PLY MOIRE TEXTILE

The specification discloses a moire textile material for use in making garments in which an under sheet has a grid like pattern thereon and an over sheet is effectively translucent and has a grid like pattern characteristic, the sheets being fastened by basting which can be removed after the cutting and sewing of a garment therefrom, the garment being adapted by virtue of the material to generate motion suggestive moire patterns of an accentuated nature responsive to slight motion of the wearer of the garment.

Claims:
I claim as my invention
1. A material for forming garments and comprising: an under sheet having a grid like pattern thereon and an exposed effectively translucent over sheet having a grid like pattern thereon and a basting network fastening said sheets together and adapted to be removed upon formation of a garment from said sheet.
2. The material of claim 1 and a bolt of material formed of said sheets.
3. The material of claim 1 in the form of a garment and means fastening said sheets together at a predetermined location in the garment to control the moire effect of relative motion between said sheets in a manner controlling the motion styling of the garment.

A material for forming garments and comprising: an under sheet having a grid like pattern thereon and an exposed effectively translucent over sheet having a grid like pattern thereon and a basting network fastening said sheets together and adapted to be removed upon formation of a garment from said sheet.
2. The material of claim 1 and a bolt of material formed of said sheets.
3. The material of claim 1 in the form of a garment and means fastening said sheets together at a predetermined location in the garment to control the moire effect of relative motion between said sheets in a manner controlling the motion styling of the garment.
Description:
This invention relates to a moire textile material for use in making garments.
It is known that a moire effect, that is an effect of watered silk, can be provided to a degree on some kinds of silk and satins. Light catches the texture of the fabric to provide a shifting, waving pattern with motion of the wearer. It has been observed, however, that the interference provided by the over laying of pattern grids, one of which is translucent or transparent, will provide shifting or varying moire patterns with very slight relative motion of the two layers. However, it is relatively impractical to attempt the manufacture of a garment from two layers of different or the same grid pattern especially since the materials may slip during cutting and in sewing.
It is the main object of the invention to provide a base pattern textile sheet and an over lay translucent or transparent patterned sheet in which the two sheets are stitched together by a basting stitch of sufficiently close grid pattern as to enable the material to be bolted and sold in standard widths and lengths.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a two ply bolt of textile material adapted to provide a moire pattern when worn as a portion of a garment or in a form constituting an entire garment for a user, and embodying basting stitching enabling the same to be cut and sewn to form garments.
Other objects of the invention will be appreciated by a study of the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

FIG. 3 is a suggestive pattern made into a garment of the underlayer of one sheet of the material of the invention as applied to a bathing suit and the appearance thereof in perspective on the wearer.
FIG. 4 is a view of a secondary or outer pattern carried by the outer translucent or transparent sheet which will be understood to be carried over the material of FIG. 3 to provide a moving display of moire pattern responsive to slight or substantial motion of the wearer of the material.
In FIG. 1 the bolt 10 of two ply material 11 of the invention comprises the textile under sheet 12 having a pattern 13 thereon and an over lay sheet 14 preferably in the form of a screen or a transparent or translucent material having a printed grid like pattern 15 thereon, the two sheets being fastened together by transverse sewn basting stitching 16 and longitudinal basting stitching 17.
As shown in FIG. 2 the under sheet having a grid like pattern 18 is adapted to generate a moire pattern by superposing thereon another grid like pattern 19 which, if moved slightly with respect to pattern 18, will cause a changing interference pattern area 20 to occur which is very sensitive in its change to any change in relative position of patterns 18 and 19. This interference of grids is well known.
The invention, however, provides for the formation of any garment from the two ply bolt of material 10 of FIG. 1 by handling the two plies together as a single sheet for cutting out and stitching or sewing in the normal way, such as to form a dress, bathing suit, halter, skirt or the like. After the garment is sewn, the basting threads 16, 17 are removed thus providing a garment such as a bathing suit 21 of FIG. 3, having an under sheet 22 comprising transverse lines giving a contouring effect when applied to the body of the user and carrying an outer sheet or over ply such as a light screen sheet 23 as indicated in FIG. 4, being a net formed of intersecting fibers or threads 24, 25 woven to define a network with open spaces between such threads or fibers.
As relative motion develops between the over sheet 23 and the under sheet 22, a moire effect is produced. It will be evident that at certain locations in any garment it may be desired to stitch the two materials together to define points in the surface at which no relative motion takes places as, for example, at a navel location, or at the small of the back, or at a point between the shoulders. These then become stationery points relative to which the rest of the figure, even in slight motion, generates accentuated displays of motion and a liveliness of the bodily contours of the wearer of unusual effect.
The other sheet 14 may be in the form of a transparent or translucent continuous sheet of natural or synthetic fiber or a plastic film having thereon a printed grid or pattern through which the pattern of the under sheet may be seen.
