GLOVE WITH PENCIL HOLDER

Abstract:
A holder for pencils, pens or other writing instruments has an adhesive coating applied to its lower surface so that it may be attached to the surface of an article for easy accessibility to the contents of the holder. The stalls which receive the writing instruments preferably are formed with an opening in the middle for increased flexibility and the adhesive applied to the lower surface of the holder may be of the pressure-sensitive type and covered with a masking sheet for ease in handling and attaching. The holder is capable of general use but finds particular utility in its application to the back of a workman's glove, such as a carpenter's glove, since it does not interfere with the workman's normal movements but locates the pens, pencils or the like where they may conveniently be reached.

Description:
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is frequently desirable to have a pencil or other writing instrument readily accessible to eliminate the necessity of locating one when it is needed. For example, it would often be convenient to have a pencil located adjacent to a telephone so that when the need arises for taking notes or messages a pencil would be close at hand. Additionally, it would be convenient to have a pen or pencil located within easy reach in a briefcase so that the necessity of unpacking the briefcase to find a pen or pencil would be eliminated.
The construction industry provides another example of the desirability of locating a marking instrument within easy reach. Thus, carpenters and other construction workers frequently find it necessary to mark measurements on the material they are working with and perform other measurement computations. Such workmen, however, are usually wearing gloves for protective purposes and, since the most convenient place for carrying a pen or pencil is in a pocket, such as a shirt breast pocket, it is necessary for the workman to remove at least one of his gloves to retrieve the writing instrument from his pocket, particularly in cold weather when outer clothing is worn.
It will be seen, therefore, that a need exists for means for positioning a writing instrument in a conveniently accessible place particularly, as noted above, in the building industries where it is inconvenient for a workman to remove his glove or gloves to retrieve a pen or pencil from his pocket.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A pen, pencil, or other writing instrument holder is provided by the present invention which may be adhesively attached at a location for convenient use. Thus, the holder may be attached to a wall adjacent a telephone or to the telephone itself, or, for example, to the inside of a brief case.
The holder is particularly adapted for attachment to the back of a workman's glove so that the workman has ready access thereto without the necessity of removing his gloves. The holder is attached to the back of the glove with the stalls thereof diagonally disposed, both for purposes of convenient access and to avoid restriction of the worker in the performance of his duties. In this regard it will be seen that the stalls are made in two sections and the entire holder preferably is constructed of a material such as a leather or plastic to provide for increased flexibility. Additionally, it will be apparent that the holder is reusable and may be removed from a worn glove or other expendable article for reattachment to another.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
As seen in FIG. 1 of the drawings, the holder 10 includes a base member 11 constructed of a flexible material such as leather, plastic or the like and having longitudinally extending side edges 12 and 13, a top edge 14 and the bottom edge, including angularly disposed bottom edge portions 15 and 16.
A first layer 20 of flexible material having side and bottom edges of substantially the same configuration as that of the base member 11 is secured thereto along their corresponding side and bottom edges. The top edge 21 of layer 20 is of greater width than the width of the base member 11 and tapers inwardly so that at its bottom edge it is of the same width as that of the underlying portion of the base member. As a result, when the layer 20 is secured at an intermediate portion 22 thereof to the base member 11 a pair of pockets 23 and 24 are formed, which, as shown, may be of different sizes to accommodate pens or pencils of different sizes.
A second layer 30 is also attached to the base member 11 along the side edges thereof and extends across the base member with its lower edge 31 spaced from the top edge 21 of the first layer 20. The layer 30 is approximately the same width as the top edge 21 of the first layer 20 and is attached to the base member at an intermediate portion 32 substantially aligned with the corresponding portion 22 of the first layer 20 to provide a pair of open-end pockets 33 and 34 substantially aligned with the elongated pockets 23 and 24.
As seen in FIG. 3 of the drawings, a layer of the adhesive 40, which preferably is of the pressure-sensitive type, is applied to the lower surface of the base member 11 and covered by a masking sheet 41 for convenience in shipping and handling of the holder. Thus, when it is desired to attach the holder to some article to permit the writing instruments 42 and 43 carried thereby to be readily accessible, it is necessary merely to peel the masking sheet 41 from the under surface of the holder and apply it in the desired position.
With reference to FIG. 2 of the drawings, one environment in which the present invention has particular utility is shown. Thus, as seen in FIG. 2, a glove 50, having a back section 51 and a palm section (not shown), with a plurality of fingers 52 extending outwardly thereof, is shown with the holder 10 of the present invention attached to the back section thereof. It will be noted in this regard that the side edges 12 and 13 of the base member are angularly disposed with respect to the side edges 53 of the glove 50.
This particular location of the holder on the glove has been found to be the most advantageous since it places the instruments carried by the holder in a readily accessible position and yet does not hamper the workman in the performance of his tasks. In this regard it will be seen that by forming the pockets in two sections with a space between, as at 20 and 30, and utilizing a flexible material for the construction, the flexibility of the glove to which it is attached is not materially impaired.
It should also be noted that although the holder is shown attached to a left-hand glove, as would normally be the case for use by a right-handed person, it can readily be attached to a right-hand glove for use by a left-handed person or for any other reason. Additionally, it will be noted that an angularly disposed portion 15 or 16 of the bottom edge of the holder will be substantially aligned with the adjacent side edge of the glove, regardless of to which glove the holder is attached. It will further be seen that where the holder is attached to an expendable article, such as a glove, it may be detached when the glove becomes worn and reattached to a new glove.
From the above it will be apparent that the present invention provides an article of manufacture which provides convenient access to pens, pencils and other writing materials carried thereby.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention.
It is frequently desirable to have a pencil or other writing instrument readily accessible to eliminate the necessity of locating one when it is needed. For example, it would often be convenient to have a pencil located adjacent to a telephone so that when the need arises for taking notes or messages a pencil would be close at hand. Additionally, it would be convenient to have a pen or pencil located within easy reach in a briefcase so that the necessity of unpacking the briefcase to find a pen or pencil would be eliminated.
The construction industry provides another example of the desirability of locating a marking instrument within easy reach. Thus, carpenters and other construction workers frequently find it necessary to mark measurements on the material they are working with and perform other measurement computations. Such workmen, however, are usually wearing gloves for protective purposes and, since the most convenient place for carrying a pen or pencil is in a pocket, such as a shirt breast pocket, it is necessary for the workman to remove at least one of his gloves to retrieve the writing instrument from his pocket, particularly in cold weather when outer clothing is worn.
It will be seen, therefore, that a need exists for means for positioning a writing instrument in a conveniently accessible place particularly, as noted above, in the building industries where it is inconvenient for a workman to remove his glove or gloves to retrieve a pen or pencil from his pocket.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A pen, pencil, or other writing instrument holder is provided by the present invention which may be adhesively attached at a location for convenient use. Thus, the holder may be attached to a wall adjacent a telephone or to the telephone itself, or, for example, to the inside of a brief case.
The holder is particularly adapted for attachment to the back of a workman's glove so that the workman has ready access thereto without the necessity of removing his gloves. The holder is attached to the back of the glove with the stalls thereof diagonally disposed, both for purposes of convenient access and to avoid restriction of the worker in the performance of his duties. In this regard it will be seen that the stalls are made in two sections and the entire holder preferably is constructed of a material such as a leather or plastic to provide for increased flexibility. Additionally, it will be apparent that the holder is reusable and may be removed from a worn glove or other expendable article for reattachment to another.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
As seen in FIG. 1 of the drawings, the holder 10 includes a base member 11 constructed of a flexible material such as leather, plastic or the like and having longitudinally extending side edges 12 and 13, a top edge 14 and the bottom edge, including angularly disposed bottom edge portions 15 and 16.
A first layer 20 of flexible material having side and bottom edges of substantially the same configuration as that of the base member 11 is secured thereto along their corresponding side and bottom edges. The top edge 21 of layer 20 is of greater width than the width of the base member 11 and tapers inwardly so that at its bottom edge it is of the same width as that of the underlying portion of the base member. As a result, when the layer 20 is secured at an intermediate portion 22 thereof to the base member 11 a pair of pockets 23 and 24 are formed, which, as shown, may be of different sizes to accommodate pens or pencils of different sizes.
A second layer 30 is also attached to the base member 11 along the side edges thereof and extends across the base member with its lower edge 31 spaced from the top edge 21 of the first layer 20. The layer 30 is approximately the same width as the top edge 21 of the first layer 20 and is attached to the base member at an intermediate portion 32 substantially aligned with the corresponding portion 22 of the first layer 20 to provide a pair of open-end pockets 33 and 34 substantially aligned with the elongated pockets 23 and 24.
As seen in FIG. 3 of the drawings, a layer of the adhesive 40, which preferably is of the pressure-sensitive type, is applied to the lower surface of the base member 11 and covered by a masking sheet 41 for convenience in shipping and handling of the holder. Thus, when it is desired to attach the holder to some article to permit the writing instruments 42 and 43 carried thereby to be readily accessible, it is necessary merely to peel the masking sheet 41 from the under surface of the holder and apply it in the desired position.
With reference to FIG. 2 of the drawings, one environment in which the present invention has particular utility is shown. Thus, as seen in FIG. 2, a glove 50, having a back section 51 and a palm section (not shown), with a plurality of fingers 52 extending outwardly thereof, is shown with the holder 10 of the present invention attached to the back section thereof. It will be noted in this regard that the side edges 12 and 13 of the base member are angularly disposed with respect to the side edges 53 of the glove 50.
This particular location of the holder on the glove has been found to be the most advantageous since it places the instruments carried by the holder in a readily accessible position and yet does not hamper the workman in the performance of his tasks. In this regard it will be seen that by forming the pockets in two sections with a space between, as at 20 and 30, and utilizing a flexible material for the construction, the flexibility of the glove to which it is attached is not materially impaired.
It should also be noted that although the holder is shown attached to a left-hand glove, as would normally be the case for use by a right-handed person, it can readily be attached to a right-hand glove for use by a left-handed person or for any other reason. Additionally, it will be noted that an angularly disposed portion 15 or 16 of the bottom edge of the holder will be substantially aligned with the adjacent side edge of the glove, regardless of to which glove the holder is attached. It will further be seen that where the holder is attached to an expendable article, such as a glove, it may be detached when the glove becomes worn and reattached to a new glove.
From the above it will be apparent that the present invention provides an article of manufacture which provides convenient access to pens, pencils and other writing materials carried thereby.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention.
