PROTECTION UNITS AND MOUNTING TOOL

A housing to support fuse wires is provided for a miniature main distribution frame. The housing is made compatible with printed circuit card techniques. A tool is supplied to enable the mounting of fuse wires into the fuse housing.

Claims:
What is claimed is

1. A fuse-carrying unit and terminal block assembly for equipping the distribution frame of a telecommunication exchange, said unit, which is assigned to a particular line, including a housing, a first and a second pair of connection terminals, and a pair of fuses through-connecting said first and said second pair of terminals, wherein the improvement comprises a housing unit, a first pair and a second pair of terminals, a pair of fuses in the form of two fuse wires soldered respectively to the first and second pairs of terminals for through-connecting said first and said second pairs of terminals, said pairs of terminals including a pair of female and a pair of male terminals located at opposite ends of said unit, said female terminals receiving a pair of make terminals of said terminal block, said male terminals adapted to receive a pair of jumper conductors, locking means provided with said unit to be locked at said terminal block, said locking means including a stud provided at the end of the housing unit carrying said pair of female terminals and the terminal block incorporating a slot for receiving and securing the stud, said stud being engaged by pressure in a corresponding elastic counter recess in the form of a slot in the end of said terminal block, and jumper conductors wound on said male terminals to establish a connection to a distribution frame.

Description:
The present invention relates to a fuse-carrying unit for equipping the distribution frame of a telecommunication exchange. The unit is assigned to a respective line and includes a housing, a first and a second pair of connection terminals and a pair of fuses through-connecting said first and said second pair of terminals.

Such a fuse carrying unit is disclosed in British Pat. No. 889,810. This known fuse-carrying unit has the drawback that it can only be used with special jacks having successive rows on the line side of the main distribution frame which must be spaced from one another to enable plugging in or removal of the above units from a lateral side of the jacks.

An object of the present invention is to provide a fuse carrying unit of the above type, which does not present the mentioned drawback.

The present fuse-carrying unit is notable for the fact that it has first and said second pairs of terminals which are constituted by a pair of female and a pair of male terminals. The pairs of terminals are located at opposite ends of said unit for receiving a pair of male terminals of a terminal block of the frame and a pair of jumper conductors, respectively.

The present invention also relates to a tool for mounting components on a support. Such tools are well known in the art.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved tool for mounting components on a support.

The present tool is characterized by the fact, that it includes a substantially U-shaped piece having free ends constituted by cutting blades. A component having to be mounted on said support is placed across said free ends by having its terminals bent and secured on the external part of the sidewalls of said blades. After said component has been fixed, e.g. soldered, on said support the superfluous ends thereof are cut out by pressing said U-shaped piece towards the support.

The above-mentioned and other objects and features of the invention will become more apparent and the invention itself will be best understood by referring to the following description of embodiments taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. 1 schematically shows in a perspective view a fuse-carrying unit in accordance with the invention;

FIG. 2 schematically shows a tool, in accordance with the invention, which is being used for mounting the fuses on the fuse-carrying unit of FIG. 1.

Referring to FIG. 1, there is shown a fuse-carrying unit 1. The unit 1 is positioned so that it is partially plugged into a terminal block part 2 of the main distribution frame (not shown) of a telecommunication exchange. The fuse-carrying unit 1 is formed by an insulating housing 6 the upper side of which has been cut away partially in this schematic representation to show its inner constituent parts. The unit 1 is thus shown to include a pair of female and a pair of male terminals 4,4' and 3,3' (terminal 4' is not shown) located at the two opposite ends of the unit 1 and to include a pair of fuses 5,5' (fuse 5' is not shown) through-connecting the terminals 4,4' and 3,3' respectively. The pair of male terminals 3,3' receives the pair of jumper conductors 9,9' of a respective line (not shown) whereas the pair of female terminals 4,4' receive the pair of male terminals 10,10' of the block 2 which correspond to the considered line. The housing 6 is provided with a removable cover 8 at the location of the fuses 5 and 5' for enabling their mounting or eventually their replacement. The housing 6 further has a stud 7 which, when the unit 1 is pushed towards the terminal block 2, is engaged into the elastic slot 11 thereof to lock unit 1 on block 2. In this manner, close packing of the units is permitted and when it is desired to withdraw a unit 1 by pulling on its terminals 3,3' (an adequately narrow tool to squeeze and pull the latter should be used), the friction on the adjacent units 1 will be insufficient to dislodge them.

The fuses 5,5' are mounted on the unit 1 by means of the tool shown in FIG. 2. This tool comprises a substantially U-shaped piece 12 whose free ends are constituted by cutting blades 15. A fuse wire, e.g. fuse wire 5, is placed across the above cutting blades 15 by having its ends bent and engaged between the external part of the blades 15 and the springs 14. After the fuse wire 5 is put in its position on the fuse-carrying unit 1, it is soldered thereon by means of a twin soldering head 13. Subsequent pressure of the U-shaped piece 12 towards the unit 1 causes the cutting out of the superfluous ends of fuse 5.

When lightning protection must also be provided for all or part of the telephone lines of the exchange, for instance the aerial lines, a similar protection unit (not shown) may be provided. This unit, in addition to the pair of fuses, carries a pair of lightning arrestors of the carbon type, as well as a third female terminal parallel with the other two for receiving a respective third male terminal of the terminal block 2, which is connected to ground. The above two lightning arrestors through-connect the aforementioned two female terminals to the third one of the protection unit. In order to enable the mounting of protection units of the two types on the same main distributing frame, the spacing between the two outer terminals of the lightning protection unit should be twice the spacing between adjacent terminals of either protection unit.

While the principles of the invention have been described above in connection with specific apparatus, it is to be clearly understood that this description is made only by way of example and not as a limitation on the scope of the invention.
