Description:
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Heretofore, in the use of Cummings diesel engines controlled by the operation of a diesel P.T. fuel pump, said fuel pump normally includes a fuel regulator mechanism by which after a predetermined maximum setting of the controls for said fuel pump, the regulator functions so as to limit or preset the maximum r.p.m. of the Cummings diesel engine. The primary purpose is, thus to prevent Cummings diesel engines or the trucks or other vehicles controlled thereby from exceeding a preset maximum r.p.m.
In connection with the Cummings diesel engine, for illustration, and the associated Cummings diesel P.T. fuel pump connected therewith, there is normally provided a spring biased fuel regulator tube movable within a tubular fuel flow housing which is responsive to volume and flow of fuel through said housing so that with a maximum flow therethrough, the regulator will move in such manner as to prevent more than a predetermined flow of regulated fuel through the regulator housing back to the diesel engine to thus, regulate maximum r.p.m. of said diesel engine.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved r.p.m. increase and adjustment pin assembly associated with the conventional regulator for such P.T. fuel pump by which by a preset manual setting, the fuel regulator tube is prevented from moving to its extreme restricting and control position with result that it is possible to achieve predetermined increased r.p.m. of the diesel engine.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
The present invention has for its primary object, a removable attachment for the regulator assembly for the diesel engine P.T. fuel pump by which predetermined preset maximum r.p.m. established for the diesel engine may be modified to thus, permit increased engine r.p.m. despite the regulator assembly normally built into the said diesel engine P.T. fuel pump regulator system.
It is another object to provide a very simple r.p.m. increase adjustment pin which may be easily added to a convention regulator housing merely by removing a pipe plug therefrom and substituting therefore, a fitting assembly for adjustably mounting and securing the said increase adjustment pin, the said pin being longitudinally adjustable, either by longitudinal movement or rotative movement, if threaded, and being so positioned as to limit maximum adjustment movements of the fuel regulator mechanism.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary partly broken away and sectioned view of the present P.T. fuel regulator and r.p.m. control mounted upon a diesel engine fuel pump, fragmentarily shown.
FIG. 2 is a similar view partly broken away illustrating a modification.
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the conventional regulator housing normally closed by a plug.
Referring to the drawing, the present invention is particularly directed to P.T. fuel pumps, such as the fuel pump fragmentarily shown at 11, including a casing 12 such as maybe involved in connection with a Cummings diesel engine, for illustration.
The said P.T. fuel pump with other conventional mechanism, not shown in detail, as forming no part of the present invention, includes a first fuel delivery conduit 13, fragmentarily shown, for delivering regulated fuel depending upon manual controls from the fuel pump casing 12 into the regulator, generally indicated at 15, FIG. 1.
The fuel pump casing 12 also includes a conventional second conduit 14 which is adapted to deliver regulated fuel through the fuel pump to the injection means or other control mechanism to the diesel engine for controlling its operation and particularly its r.p.m.
The present Cummings diesel engine P.T. fuel pump for illustration, includes tubular housing 16 which is connected to the first fuel supply conduit 13 and projects outwardly of fuel pump casing and into regulator housing 17.
Said regulator housing at one end has a threaded bore 18 which is normally closed by a plug 19, FIG. 3. Regulator housing 17 includes at its opposite end, an annular mounting flange 20 which is secured by fasteners 21 to the fuel pump casing with a suitable gasket 22 interposed.
Said regulator housing thus defines with tubular housing 16 annular passage 23 conducting the flow of regulated fuel from the regulator housing into the second fuel delivery conduit 14.
Tubular housing 16 has an internally tapered bore 24 which towards its outlet end is of reduced diameter.
Fuel regulator tube 25 is loosely positioned within housing 16 defining the control fuel passage 26 therebetween which becomes partly restricted upon maximum longitudinal movement of regulator tube 25 towards the outlet end of housing 16.
Said regulator tube includes shoulder 27, which bears against one end of coiled compression spring 28.
The opposite end of said spring is seated within disc 29 anchored by snap ring 30, FIG. 2.
As part of the fuel regulator assembly, there is an idle adjustment screw 31 which is threaded axially into regulator tube 25 and adjustably with respect to bore 34 and the radial bore 35.
Fuel regulator button 32 is loosely nested within bore 34 and bears against coil spring 33 within said bore and is responsive to fuel pressure and flow for the bleeding of such fuel into the bore 34 and out through the radial passage 35 so as to variably regulate idle speed adjustments or flow of fuel to the Cummings diesel engine all in a conventional manner.
The foregoing description of the Cummings diesel P.T. pump regulator assembly is a conventional construction and as normally set up the regulator housing 17 is closed by the threaded plug 19.
THE PRESENT IMPROVEMENT
The improvement in the regulator mechanism for the P.T. fuel pump assembly is directed to a means by which the control effect of the regulator tube 25 can be modified and mechanically prevented from moving to its maximum control position.
In the normal operation of such regulator the tension of spring 28 and the diameter of the regulator tube 25 moving within the tapered bore 24 is such that upon a predetermined setting, when the P.T. fuel pump has received such control as would permit maximum flow of fuel therethrough, the r.p.m. of the Cummings diesel engine can be positively limited and set. Thus the regulator provides a means for determining the maximum flow of regulated fuel from the chamber 23 out through the passage 14.
On removing the plug 19, a suitable double threaded fitting 38 is projected into the threaded bore 18, FIG. 1, adapted to slidably receive r.p.m. increase adjustment pin 36 having right angular handle 37.
A combination locknut and compression seal assembly 39 is slidably mounted over the pin 36 and after longitudinal adjustment of the pin within fitting 38 said nut is tightened for anchoring the pin 36 in its adjusted position.
So adjusted, FIG. 1, its inner end is normally spaced from the idle adjustment screw 31. The spacing is such that the pin as positioned, will limit maximum longitudinal movement of the fuel regulator tube 25 with the result that said fuel regulator tube as it moves within the tapered bore 24, will not move into its full fuel limiting position. This means that the Cummings diesel engine speed may be thus increased since a control is thus provided for the fuel regulator.
The modification shown in FIG. 2 is a slight simplification since the r.p.m. increase adjustment pin 40 replaces the plug 19 and its threaded portion projects directly through the regulator housing 17 axially thereof with its inner end again adjustably spaced as desired with respect to the idle adjustment screw 31. This, thus, provides a means for limiting the normal maximum control movements of the fuel regulator tube and prevents same from moving to its extreme fuel limiting position under the normal pressure and volume of fuel flowing through the passage 13 and through the regulator housing 16.
The foregoing r.p.m. increase adjustment pin is thus, incorporated into the fuel regulator mechanism, which, if the pin 36 or 40 is adjusted outwardly sufficiently, will operate in its conventional manner, limiting the r.p.m. of the Cummings diesel engine. Alternately, the pin 36 or pin 40 may be adjusted longitudinally inward and so spaced with respect to the idle speed control screw 31 that a positive means may be provided selectively and adjustably for limiting maximum controlling movements of the fuel regulator tube 25.
If desired, the control pin assembly may be completely removed when not in use and replaced by the plug 19 FIG. 3.
Heretofore, wherein it was desired to regulate the control effect of the regulator assembly, FIG. 1, an involved operation was contemplated, since it required the replacement of the spring 28, the addition possibly of shims and possible modification of the fuel regulator button 32.
By the present invention, therefore, despite the regulator effect in the conventional regulator mechanism, a means is provided of a simple nature wherein, the regulator effect may be modified to thus provide for an increased engine r.p.m. as desired.
