Description:

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in respirators and more particularly to an air supply device therefor.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide an air supply device for the purpose of supplying clean air to respirators in a convenient manner and through the medium of equipment not cumbersome to the wearer.

Another important object of the invention is to provide an air filtering unit for respirators which is of very simple construction and low cost to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device applied to a respirator and being worn.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view showing the device in relation to the main air supply line.

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the respirator and showing the air spreader.

Figure 4 is an inside elevational view of the perforated section.

Figure 5 is a section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes a conventional respirator, while numeral 6 generally refers to the improved filtering unit.

This unit consists of a pair of cylindrical cuplike members 7, 8, the cup-like member 8 overlapping the cup-like member 7, the latter being provided with perforations 9 in its bottom wall and through which air can pass to the interior of the respirator 5. The member 7 is suitably attached to the respirator 5 so that said perforations 9 pass air therethrough into the respirator.

Numeral 10 denotes an elbow projecting from the intermediate portion of the cup-shaped member 8 and at the inside of this member 8 is a spreader plate I spaced from the member 8 by connnectors 12 and being disposed over the inner end of the elbow 10 for the purpose of distributing air in all directions in the filtering unit 6. The filtering unit 6 is to be filled with some suitable filtering material.

Numeral 13 denotes a hose which extends from the elbow 10 and again engages over a nipple 14, this nipple 14 projecting from one end of a hose section 15, which, in turn, is disposed over a nipple 16 projecting from a corresponding valve 17 located on a manifold 18, which, in turn, is connected with an air supply line (not shown).

The upper end of the manifold 18 is closed as denoted by numeral 19 in Figure 5, and obviously a plurality of valves 17 are provided on this upstanding manifold 18, so that any number of hose 13 can be connected to the manifold for the supply of air to adjacent workmen.

It is preferable that the cup-shaped section 7 has a bayonet slot 20 therein to receive a projection 21 on the inner side of the section 8.

The air spreader II within the respirator is important in that it creates a smooth flow of air over the entire face of the filter. Therefore, breathing is more natural. Furthermore, this spreader is a protection for the filtering element when working off a high pressure line.

16 While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: In combination, a respirator, an air filtering unit on one side of the respirator, said air filtering unit comprising a pair of cylindrical cuplike outer and inner members disposed in telescopic relation, one of said members being provided with a perforated sieve-like wall opposed to said side of the respirator with the perforations thereof opening into said respirator, an axial conduit extending from the opposed wall of the other member, an air supply tube connected to the conduit, and an air distributor at the inside of the air filter fixed to said opposed wall of the other member concentrically of said conduit with its perimeter spaced from the circumferential wall of the inner member.
